April 16, 201214 yr Hi guys I'm a bit confused about something. Sometimes I'm cruising at 20.000 feet, engine leaned, fuel flow about 100, doing maybe 170 knots, and suddenly the engine starts sputtering and loses power. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Only remedy is to glide down to around 6.000 where it will regain power. Any suggestions?
April 16, 201214 yr I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Nothing! There's a "feature" in FSX which brings the joys of carburetor icing to turbocharged, fuel-injected engines. :-) Just hit the "h" key to turn on the non-existant carb heat for your non-existant carb and all should be well. I seem to recall that Bert Pieke configured a "gauge" to do this automatically for his fuel-injected planes, but I don't remember where I saw this. Perhaps he'll see this and chime in. I've added "h" as part of my pre-takeoff checklist for my simple solution. Scott
April 17, 201214 yr What really bugs me about it is not just "Icing" of a fuel injection "carburetor". It also occurs too often in clear air. Maybe my memory is failing but I seem to recall that no icing can occur without visible moisture (fog, clouds, etc). Anyhow, if Bert is in the neighborhood maybe he will give us one of his Carb-Heat-for-Fuel-Injected-Engines gauges. Neal Howard
