Help Is it okay to overclock a CPU?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone am kind of new to the Overclock thing. I have done some research an people said its safe , but i wanted to ask here in AVSIM since you guys know more about this stuff. So i have Quad Core AMD processore it .was 3.2 when i got it brand new . So when i run a autotune test it gives me all the level that my processore can reach up to 4.0 when i stop it an it can go more higher that that i just stop it there so it won't keep on going higher because i don't know if it is safe or not to overclock . When i took a look to see if its hot where the CPU is its warm not even warm like cold instead of hot its like normal. So in the overclocking they said normaly it would increase power an heat in the CPU. An the CPU can go more higher than that . So i want you guys to tell me how is overclocking does it gives a boost to FSX. Because i have never done it before i have never needed to but since i am running high FPS payware like PMDG i would like to know if i can overclock my CPU even dow it say it can go above all more the 4.0 thats where i stop it because i was scared of how high it was going . But the cpu seem like its running nice . I do admit that i have more than 3 fans in CPU.

Please give me some advice about overclocking my CPU

There are detailed tutorials on overclocking, but yes, FSX really responds well

to overclocking and as long as your system is stable and the CPU temperature

is OK, I would highly recommend it.

Why not run at 4.0 for a while and see how it all works at that level?

I have not overclocked my i7, but I wouldn't be afraid to do so if I felt it was necessary - the stock speeds of processors are usually well within conservative limits, so there is generally a bit of room to soup them up.

One word of warning:

Overclocking can have disastrous consequences if not done right. I'm not talking about damages to your hardware, but when the system doesn't run 100% reliable you can destroy data on your hard disk. If you use your PC for anything else but FSX I would be very careful and take a conservative overclocking approach. And you have to run lots of long-running tests to ensure that your PC still works reliable after overclocking.

The best thing that can happen to you with an unstable system is Windows showing you a bluescreen (that is to protect you from any further data loss). The worst thing that can happen: All data written to your hard disk ends up as junk.

If you're not willing to take any risks, then leave the whole overclocking thing.

Regards,

Tom
