April 26, 201214 yr I thought this was interesting. A new training course for the spouses of Pilots that teach them how to land an airplane in the event of a medical emergency: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2012/04/25/mb-learn-to-land-lyncrest.html The program is being offered at a small airport outside Winnipeg, Manitoba. Following the recent incident in Wisconsin this might just catch on. Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
April 26, 201214 yr These have been around for awhile. They are called pinch hitter courses around the US. Basically we go up and tell wives, girlfriends and children how to do the basics of operating an airplane. Most are surprised at how easy it is to fly and end up getting their own license. I met one lady whose husband lost his license so she got hers so he could still fly the airplane when they traveled in their Bonanza. Chris Miller
April 26, 201214 yr Author Not sure how it works in the USA but Canada does have a recreational pilot's permit (basically a student permit that allows one passenger). I would actually recomend this one over a 'Learn to Land' course. I think it is about 20 training hours. I think these guys are just cashing in on a recent news story. Not a bad idea though Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
April 26, 201214 yr Piper once had courses for new owners, they were part of the cost of the new plane. It included pilot training for the owner and the option for a spouses course. A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

That is why they came out with the Sport Pilot license and it has been doing fairly well. Chris Miller
