  3. I never thought I'd shed tears over something FlightSim related, but today I did just that. I'm tearing up again up as I type this. Amazing how one man could have such a profound effect on so many lives of people he never met. Yet he clearly cared so deeply for. His love for us, the FS community, was beyond words. I'm off to raise a glass in his memory and shed a few more tears. Jacob

  6. Wow! That is indeed sad. And yes you are correct 150 people are no longer with us, will never see family and friends again. If you've never heard the term "Nearest Suitable Alternate" then yes yztpilot is right, you're not a pilot associated with any 121 operation. If FAA designates all suitable alternates in any 121 carriers operations manual. You can just drop a A320/737/757/777/747 into any airfield.
  7. Not sure what airline or operator you work for but every QRC I've had to memorize classified a complete loss of pressurization as an emergency requiring immediate landing at the nearest suitable alternate. Ever heard of cascading failures? ECS is not just pressurization, a lot of other stuff immediately becomes a concern. Most importantly bleed air and primary equipment cooling. Infact I have the PC for my equipment in front of me now and it classifies a loss of pressurization as the same as smoke/fumes/odor in the cockpit. Its an emergency, you declare it and land immediately. And another thing if you are in an emergency decent profile staying on airway while diving from FL340 to 10,000 ft is insane. What about air traffic below you on the same airway? Especially in RVSM airspace. You may be confusing drift down procedures for an engine out profile with loss of cabin pressurization. I dunno.
  8. Great work!

  10. http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/8/5080192/microsoft-ceo-candidate-stephen-elop-bing-xbox-rumors If MS sold off Xbox they would be killing off a huge cash cow… and pretty much walking away from gaming all together... I'd watch this closely, as it would give us a small peek into MS thinking as far as gaming goes and any hopes of a future resurrection of Flight Simulator… Which, right now appears to be near zero.

  18. I've been simming since the days of SubLogic... my first MSFS was version 5... owned everyone since then... I've used every windows platform since Win95, across more than 10 computers, many were custom built for FS. All of them were buggy, never worked properly and CTD daily... Why I switched to Mac... out of frustration with MS. The only sim I've never had trouble with was XP, then only on Mac OS... It's a terrible feeling to set your FS up for a long haul flight for an over night trip say from LAX to London, only to awake to a CTD or BSOD... I honestly cannot recall ever completing a flight with MSFS longer than 3 or 4 hours without trouble of some kind. I've left iMac and XP9 running for 2.5 days straight, had the 747 set to fly around the world with unlimited fuel just to see if it could be done. Had no trouble at all, including times I used the same iMac to surf the net for hours while XP did its thing in the background...
  19. Well, my main problem with the PMDG has little to do with PMDG itself... they are cursed by the system they are required to work within. Windows and FSX. Neither are very stable, never have been... probably never will be... I run XP9 and 10 via Mac OSX and its rock solid. Especially on long haul flights... I've never had XP9/10 CTD on any long haul... cannot say that for FSX.
  20. Thanks! I was thinking the X-Plane 777 would be smoother, as the sim as a whole is far smoother than FSX, even under heavy loads. I'll most likely be picking up the XP 777 this weekend.
