Carenado PA46 Malibu released

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a heads up for those interested. I was visiting Carenado's site and saw the release. Just picked it up.

Maybe a nice GA flight this evening with a nice glass of wine by my side.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I love the (piston) PA46s (hate the turbine conversions!).......... but funds are limited and have now been 'ringfenced' for a certain inbound 777.

may pick this Malibu up in a few weeks though.

@Dave,

Me too on the 777. Of course I am traveling to London this week and will not be back until September 7th. It's the first time such an anticipated release is coming out while I'm away. I'm bummed out on that front.

@Douglas, thanks for posting the link. I forgot as usual...not that no one knows where to find Carenado! LOL

Wow, I can't recall a Carenado release being met with so little reaction.  Sandwiched in amongst a number of "almost released" biggies, this seems to be all but lost.

Back when I was a Piper owner, this was one of my "maybe I'll step up to this one day" planes.  I'm going to have to get it no matter what, I know, but I'd still love to hear comments from anyone who's jumped on it already.  I thought they might recycle the G500 from the JetProp, so the analogue (with EHSI) is a nice surprise.

EHSI? The HSI looks non digital to me.. Unless I misinterpret the meaning of EHSI.

Thanks for this update. I've been waiting for this and glad to know the cockpit is analogue!

Yeah, I could well be seeing this thing wrong - it's not a system I've ever seen or heard of before [EMIS - Electronic Module Instrument System?].  The AI/flight director is clearly a mechanical gyro, but the HSI looks kinda digital from the images.  But maybe not.

Huh maybe. Not sure ill be getting this. Kinda bored with fs lately. Really getting the itch to fly RW again. Though ill prolly get the a2a sky hawk.

I actually like the JetProp. Not sure about this piston version, it feels like a bit of a downgrade. Lower cruising speed, lower climb rate, longer take-off and landing distance and no glass panel (the "semi-glass" panel of the Carenado JetProp is actually one of my favorites).

But the piston has soul! .... ..... nicer sounds, more responsive, more organic.... but I am the same with the RealAir Duke.   Got 500+ hours in the piston but I bought the Turbine (I got caught up in the moment!) and have flown 2 hours in 2 years!......  I do love turbo-props in what I see as the right aircraft (eg.. Q400 or even King Air, PC-12 et), but I am not keen on these conversions.  Bought and flew the PA46T once, and binned it.

Really looking forward to this one.   If you put something like "aussie malibu" into YouTube theres some awesome vids on there of a guy in Australia who flies one of these PA46-350Ps all over Ozzie.   They're really high quality vids and his avionics are very similar to this offering from Carenado.

Will definitely get this, but it will be a few weeks after the 777.

@ Moss1  - Jeff, oh that's bad timing! ..... I bet you're itching to get back from your trip!

I think the conversions have "soul" more so than the factory airplanes. I guess I just like that they're a bit unusual and quirky  B)

I'm with Jimmi on this one.  What makes planes like the JetProp and Turbine Duke interesting to fly and not your run-of-the-mill turbo-prop is the fact that they're real-world conversions that have certain real-world limitations and quirks.  Those limitations increase the interest in flying the planes from a sim point of view.  To be flown right these planes require certain adjustments and I enjoy that.

That said, I still love the piston Duke and not surprisingly, I love the idea of having a good piston Malibu.  Much as I've come to enjoy flying light turbo-props in the sim, I'm still at heart a piston guy as that's what I've flown IRL.  Someone earlier called this a step back from the JetProp, but I don't look at it quite that way.  They're different planes, which need to be flown differently to be the most effective.  The old apples and oranges thing.

Scott

What?  No discount for customers who bought the other PA46?

The VCs, avionics, and pretty much everything apart from the shell are very different though.

If it flies considerably better and more convincingly than the PA46T, I won't mind paying the full price!
