May 1, 201214 yr Each vendor, ASUS, Megabyte, ASRock et al have a range of MBs from 100s to 300s. Apart from the obvious featuers like number of 6GB HDs and WIFI and Memory slots and 3.0USB vs 2.0 USBs IS there a difference is OCability which is not so obvious? Lets say, I decide on ASUS and the 77chipset (Known ....at least for me) as a vendor, next I look for the feature sets that I need. With that as a criteria I elminate and come up with a set of MB that has all the features I need, I now look for the OCability... but I don't have any parameter to go by except the price. IF the lowest cost MB has all the feature set that I need, would I be risking the OCability by going for that board instead of spending an additional $100 and go for the "gamer" MB? Sometimes, I tend to spend more money and go for the expensive MB just so I don't risk getting a non OC MB.. Is this foolish? Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter

With Asus, as long as you purchase one of the -V motherboards, you should have no problem OC'ing. You will only loose features like USB3 front header, etc. For example, an Asus P8Z77-V would have the same OC potential as an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe.
May 1, 201214 yr Author Thank you. So the $139 MB listed here is as good as the $274 MB as far as OC is concerned. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=Asus+P8Z77-V K. that makes it a lot more easier to pick a board now.. All I have to do then is take a look at each of the MB listed there and check off the features that I need. Thank you Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
May 1, 201214 yr Author But this leaves out the ASUS Sabertooth. So how would we know if the P8Z77-V is better than the Sabertooth? in terms of OCability? :) MAnny Sabertooth uses lower memory bandwidth? 18xxx vs the the 2600 of the P8Z77 but looks way cooler with the armor! :) So its either the $199 ASUS P8Z77-V or the Sabertooth for $239 Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter

As Ben said you only loose features when you use lower model boards. But this leaves out the ASUS Sabertooth. So how would we know if the P8Z77-V is better than the Sabertooth? in terms of OCability? So its either the $199 ASUS P8Z77-V or the Sabertooth for $239 The P8 is not better than the Saber in terms of OC. They will both OC to similar CPU and Mem speeds. Just like the ROG boards won't magically OC better than the P8's. Max OC is based mainly on the individual CPU. Some are easy to OC with minimal volts and some are temperamental. Much like women. :Big Grin: The Newegg description is just abbreviated on the Saber. Both boards will allow you to OC your memory above 1600mhz. Just remember there is little improvement above 1600mhz. I noticed no real improvement, besides memory benchmarks, going from 1600 up to 2200. I run 1866 because that is where my mem defaults. I prefer the Saber just in terms of look and they have a tendency to run cooler but not my much. Both are excellent boards.
