RNAV approach question...

I read somewhere today that RNAV approaches are not to be hand flown - is this an legal issue or does it vary depending on airline policy? thnx!!

FCTM recommends to use autopilot on RNAV approaches to minimize crew workload. Especially usefull in IMC conditions. So it's better not to disengage autopilot until visual reference.

However in VMC hand fly is usefull to maintain flight crew proficiency. And, of course, you have to disengage autopilot at MDA minus 50feet (for JAA rules) or at 50 feet AGL for FAA.

My personal advice, not to be taken as word of Boeing, or airline:

 

If you fly in LNAV/VNAV overlay mode, keep it on AP, especially if there are turns.

If you have IAN, and especially if the approach is straight line to runway, it is basically the same as ILS, easier to fly by hand.
