Having trouble with an unspecified "fatal error" on startup.

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.

Hey there, I was wondering if anybody could provide assistance. My problem is as follows:

This morning whilst attempting to load up FSX I received an error immediately saying "SCENERY.CFG file error. Local scenery directory (Addon Scenery\SCENERY) in Area.115 not found. Click OK to continue."

Immediately I scoured the internet for other cases and came across a few with specifically Area.115 and many more with variation on the number. Almost all of the people with the issue pointed out that they couldn't find the Addon Scenery folder which should be located in the FSX root, and likewise mine had gone. The advice was pretty much uniform, "create the missing folder and sub folders". I did this and re-installed Acceleration for good measure, which got rid of the initial error, but alas, the game now reaches the main menu and suffers an unspecified fatal error.

Is there a way to figure out what's causing this error, an error log somewhere perhaps? I'm usually pretty nifty with my computer but I'm totally stumped with this one.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Look in your Windows Event Viewer.

It will tell you the module that caused the error.

Thank you, I didn't even know that existed. This is what It said:

Well,

Search internet for "visualfx.dll" problems.

First time I seen that one.

Couldn't find anything conclusive really. Slight progress however. I deleted the scenery and FSX CFG files from the profile which now means the game can atleast launch. I can go to any of the tabs with the exception of Free Flight. Once I reach that FSX crashes again.

I already did that, on your advice earlier.

After each error is it the same module error?

You did not mention.

Yeah, I've done it several times. Still the visualfx.dll.

Do you have Win7?

Do you have the uiautomationcore.dll fix?

Yes and yes.

Alex, have you by any chance deleted a scenery or a bgl? Or have you installed a scenery which is duplicated? Your initial thread is one that looks like a scenery file has been inadvertently been deleted.

The most recent changes I made were installation of the PMDG 737 and the MD-11. The 737 was a while ago and I've flown it a lot without any issues, the MD-11 was a few weeks ago. I did however uninstall the MD-11 last night as it was crashing every so often and I have some space constraints. It may well have been the last thing I did before calling it a day actually...

Just uninstalling a PMDG MD-11 should, in theory, not cause any scenery issues. However, the clue may lay in the fact you state that it was causing a CTD. That could have been linked to something else which now, in removing the MD-11, is causing this scenery glitch. Did you by any chance use a third party registry cleaner when uninstalling the MD-11?
