June 11, 201213 yr Hello Folks, I have been having an issue in high scenery areas, most specifically in the London area. I have high traffic, and scenery active for EGLC EEGKK and EGLL. The combination seems to always make me get the "out of memory" error on final into either EGLC or EGLL, despitre the fact my system has a whopping 24GB of RAM. I have taken some looks at the posts available and I'm just not seeing anything helpful for me. My specs are as follows: Windows 7 2600K i7 Processor 24 GB RAM and if there anything else pertinant you need to help me, please let me know, and thank you all for your help in advance!
June 11, 201213 yr What is your version of Windows 7? 32 bit or 64 bit. You have a large amount of memory but anything over 6 gigs is really not used by FSX. FSX uses about 4 gigs max and the rest of your memory is used for other system functions. That's if you have a 64 bit OS. With a 32 bit OS you will need to add a switch so that FSX can see more of your memory. The London area pretty much brings my system to its knees and you'll have to turn some of your FSX setting down, especially if you have the commercial versions of EGLL, EGLC, London City, and London. They are frame rate killers. What you can do is save your current configuration by going into Settings at the FSX startup screen, then click Save. Name it something like My high settings or My favorite settings. Then customize your settings for London by lowering many of the sliders. AI is a killer and should be kept around 30 max. Cars around 10%. You can get some good ideas for the proper settings by reading the excellent guide by Word Not Allowed in the Hardware Forum (it's pinned at the top and you can also get to it by going to the FSX forum and looking at the pinned document at the top). NickN has some excellent suggestions too in his Setting Up FSX and Tuning It guide (google it if you need the link). Once you have customized the settings for the London area, save it on the Settings page to something like London. This way you can use your high settings for other locations and when you plan to fly around London, load the London settings. Also make sure you have the Microsoft.net framework up-to-date. As one of its functions, developers use it to manage memory for their addons. Hope this helps. Best regards, Jim
June 11, 201213 yr Adding to Jim's description and tips, make sure to run FSX with the Highmemfix line in your fsx.cfg. It enhances the memory handling of that old engine a lot. It's no magic bullet if you really add a ton of addons and pick very high settings (which may still run fine on the fps) though. The resources good ol' FSX is able to use are limited and detailed planes in that addon filled (but nice) London area eat them up alive. On a long shot, there was a user of the Power Project freeware not too long ago. He received some out of memory problems around the UK. Are you using that one? Older version of UTX Europe may also add to that problem. So keep it current. That's version 1.4.
June 12, 201213 yr Author Hello! I have the highmemfix currently in my fsx.cfg, but I do appreciate the suggestion, CoolP. I also appreciate the advice, firehawk. I use the Windows 7 64 bit system. Is there any way to push FSX to use more than the 6GB?
June 12, 201213 yr Also, make sure you're running FSX SP2! I had the same problem with 8GB and the problem went away when I installed it. Gregg Seipp "A good landing is when you can walk away from the airplane. A great landing is when you can reuse it." i9 64GB RAM, GTX-5090
June 18, 201213 yr Just a quick note:CD - if you're running SP2 - it is already large_address_aware: the 64-bit OS automatically makes the full 4-gig available to FSX, and so it is not necessary to set a /3 gig switch in the boot.ini. The /3GB switch is only for use by the 32-bit versions of XP, Vista and Windows 7. Also - unfortunately no. FSX will use no more than that same 4 gig: however - other apps - providing they're 64-bit apps - will not interfere with FSX. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
June 18, 201213 yr Author Well, thanks for the help gentlemen. It seems almost unfair that even though my CPU can handle everything I am throwing at it and that I have more than an adequate amount of RAM, I am unable to run around my highly detailed London area because of an FSX limitation.
June 18, 201213 yr One of the things you might do, CD, is to shut down as many of the services and processes that the pc doesn't need while you're flying: everything in the background is eating memory: lower the cloud resolution, cut that traffic back a tad: use lower res on that traffic; AG, SC and LOD are also hogs. http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/download.html i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
