Weather and FSX

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm using FSX with UTX, GEX and FEX and UK2000 scenery which all work very well and I'm pleased with the results I get. I also like flying GA aircraft and the more detailed product from A2A and PMDG.

I have noticed especially flying the PMDG 737NGX that when at high altitudes I get some very erratic weather fluctuations, I should say I have real world weather set and winds aloft with updates every 15mins set in FSX too. but I notice massive sudden swings of the wind sometimes over 90 degrees and huge variation in wind speeds too, which can't be realistic surely!

While I enjoy having the weather set for "real world" I'm wondering if there are any weather programs out there that will do a better job than FSX? I have been looking at Active Sky and REX so far, but want something that will allow me to still use my existing UTX, GEX and if possible FEX products without any problems. One thing I notice is that REX gives you new runway and taxiway textures, grass and water textures too. How does that react with GEX and FEX and UK2000?

I read a review on here about REX which said little problem with frames/second this is important to me as my computer is only mid level, works fine now but I'm not looking to slow it down any more really! So I have to be careful what I install.

So if anyone can suggest anything to replace FSX weather with something more realistic, but still realtime, which works anywhere in the FSX world then I'd really like to hear what your ideas are!

Thanks again for any suggestions.

Happy flying!

I use the same combination of products as you, plus ASE for my weather, and it's brilliant. A massive improvement over default FSX. I can't speak for REX, but there are many on here who can !

Hi Dave! For my weather setup I am running with ASE for the weather engine and for the cloud/water/sky textures I am using FEX. If you buy Active Sky 2012 you will get the best of both worlds, a great weather engine as well as cloud/sky/water textures. If you only want a weather engine you can buy ASE. ASE will use whatever cloud and sky textures you have installed, FSX default or another like in my case FEX. In my opinion if you are getting a weather engine you really need to replace the FSX default cloud textures to get the full effect. I see alot of people not being happy with the perf hit they get using REX textures but I get great results with FEX. In FEX you can choose different texture formats and/or resolutions to best suit your needs. If you do not already have FEX or REX I would get Active Sky 2012 and be done with it. As for your big wind shift issues I dont get any with using DWC mode in ASE. I also have turbulance turned off in FSX. This allows me to use winds aloft without problems. If you want to try a FREE weather engine you can try FSrealWX lite and you can get it here: http://www.hanse-coders.net/index.php?page=self&id=1 . I ended up switching to ASE as I had issues I could not resolve, but you could at least try it and see what a weather engine can do for FSX.

In REX You can deselect textures you DON'T want overwritten in the options menu.

I flew some high altitude long distance flights yesterday using Rex Essential. So far no weird wind shifts experienced.

I used to use ASE but after upgrading to Rex Essential I don't use it much now as I love the textures and cloud layers generated in REX E. This WILL put a heavier load on your system but I haven't noticed any significant problems with my FPS. If anything REX E is smoother than the previous version.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your eventual choice!
