Duxford Flying Legends 2012

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post this little trip report for anyone interested - went to the Flying Legends Airshow this last Sunday - What an event. If your into your WW2 warbirds then this is certainly the show for you - Usually end of June each year. Thankfully there were no incidents this year!

Lots of beautiful warbirds including Spitfires, P51s, a P-17, Two P-40's, Couple of Seafuries, Catalina, Several DC-3s, BF-109s, a few I can't remember, and of course the beautiful lady 'Sally B' - The resident B-17!

As soon as I arrived and saw experience flights being offered I had to have a go - Firstly went up for a quick couple of circuits round the airfield in the beautiful Dragon Rapide - This particular aircraft was build in 1942 I believe and was a pleasure to be in - Here's a quick video I took of the taxi-out and takeoff!

Sorry the video is a bit shaky - youtube is meant to remove the shakiness but it doesn't seem to be working!

After the quick flight there was time for a few hours of the museum before the airshow started at 2pm - and what an airshow!

Starting with a display by Spitfires various and the two BF-109s and then a medley of various aircraft through to 5.30 finishing with their famous 'Balbo' - almost every warbird that has taken part takes to the skies for one big fly past - Unfurtunately I was too awe struck to get a picture of it but standing under that many Merlins definately put a smile on my face!

Finally to finish off the day for me with a bit of a finalé - I had booked myself a brief flight in a Tiger Moth, and the weather couldn't have been more beautiful! I've flown the Chipmunk several times before, but for me this was nothing like! Beautiful open cockpit and I was a little surprised when my instructor informed me that we had no brakes! From 600 feet I was handed the controlls and was permitted to fly the rest of the flight up to half way downwind - we climbed up to 1800 and did some tight turns and had a quick loose formation flight with their aero clubs other Tiger Moth - what a sight and experience!

There's a video somewhere of my takeoff in the moth but for the moment it seems to be hiding! Below is a link of the pics I took during the airshow - unfortunately they're not of the best quality as my good digital camera did what it always does whenever I have something interesting to shoot; hide and be unable to be found nomatter how hard I look!

The wally in the biggles jacket is myself, just before going to jump into the Moth - there's also a photo in the cockpit that I'll have to digitize and get on there too later on!

Link here - http://imgur.com/a/LZeP5#26 The 5 Aircraft in close formation are the Yak Aerostars - whom put on a show that in my humble opinion is easily the rival of the Red Arrows! They were truly fantastic!

Regards,

James

Wow had no idea this was on, I was down at the Waddington Airshow on this day. I have also been up in the Dragon Rapide and that was amazing, cannot imagine what the Tiger Moth would have been like (apart from probably very cold).

Hi Tim,

The Moth isn't actually as cold as you'd think. As you can see the done thing is to wear a nice big jacket anyway - but the airflow actually passes over your head. I was very surprised that I didn't feel any 'wind' on my face or arms at-all, felt more like still air to me!

Lucky you! Love to have been there, but I live way too far north and can't currently justify the expense of travel & accommodation even for a show like that. Thanks for the video though ;)

I'm gonna take up the Dragon Rapide from Duxford in FS9 tomorrow morning and use some imagination :Just Kidding:

Some nice related pics here...

Hi Raindance,

wow that scenery looks amazing - is it freeware? Either way I think I need that in my virtual world!

Hi Raindance,

It is freeware, and it is amazing. Find it in the AVSIM library here (look for acg_iwm_duxford_fs9.zip). It has an optional airshow add-on, with crowds of onlookers.

EDIT: Actually, it's the sort of detailed scenery that makes you wish you could easily walk around and not just fly, but driving slowly in a microlight on the ground is almost as good..
