Bombsight for fsx!

Featured Replies

Hi guys 'n' gals

Been searching for a while but im unable to find any kind of sight for fsx :(

I have me a B17 :)..Bombs that explode on impact with fire/smoke effects and FLAK over the target area's...its just impossible to hit the ''targets''!

Can anyone piont me in the right direction please? (if any exist?)

Thanks.

Regards

I can't answer your question I'm afraid, but it does sound like you would enjoy the Captain Sim Weapon for FSX Add-on. You can add guns, missiles and bombs to any FSX aircraft and there are various targeting radars and collimated HUDs and sites you can configure. I am still very new to it but it looks pretty complete and has made a great add-on for my Lancair Legacy and others.

You might also look at the MilViz F-15E and the VRS SuperBug F-18, each with very, very sophisticated targeting.

It's relatively easy to make one if you have FS Panel Studio, or it not, a few of the Just Flight Mosquito expansion pack Mossies have a WW2-era bombsight, i.e. the Mk16 PR variant has this:

Obviously it is a course setting RAF Automatic PR sight and not a Mark 16 Norden as the B-17 had, but then again, the Norden was nowhere near as good as the Allied propaganda claimed it was, nor was it a secret either, which they also claimed, in fact it was virtually identical to the Luftwaffe's Lotfernrohr 7, which basically had the same mechanism as the Norden, and all of those bombsights only managed a CEP of about 15 percent of bombs within 1,000 feet of the aim point, so that one is as good as anything for FSX.

USAAF B-17 and RAF Lancaster bombing accuracy only surpassed 60 percent 1,000 foot CEP figures when they started area bombing using H2X radar and flare-dropping deHavilland Mosquito pathfinders instead of the visual bombsights, so you'll probably do just as well as they did. However, that means you'll probably miss, because unlike the USAAF Eighth Air Force, you won't have another 800 B-17s in formation with you at staggered altitudes all dropping bombs too, so the chances of hitting anything other than a fairly large town centre from 20,000 feet after a bit of practice, are pretty slim, as they were in 1943, which is why they carpet bombed stuff with massive formations.

For example, on the first USAAF raid on the ball bearing factory at Schweinfurt, the USAAF dispatched about 240 B-17s to that target, with another 140 or so going after the Messerschmitt factory at Regensburg in order to split up the Luftwaffe's defences, and there were well over 400 Allied fighters escorting the force too, i.e. including supernumeraries, there were about 800 Allied aircraft in total involved, with over 500 Allied aircrew being lost on that one mission, and all that was just to hit two targets. 230 civilians were killed in the raid, and for all that effort, and loss of life, the result was only a 34 percent drop in ball bearing production, which was rapidly recovered from too, particularly since the Germans had stockpiled ball bearings anyway, in anticipation of such a raid and were also prompted to disperse production, making a repeat performance of such a mission more difficult in future. You could probably carry out a more effective mission with two pilots and a couple of F-16s carrying Mark 84 LGBs these days.

Of course, you could make one out of a coat-hanger and go bomb the Ruhr dams :smile2:

I do know one developer who was planning to add a working Mk XIV bombsight into an upgrade to his a/c (a WW2 bomber), and it was looking pretty good, but I believe that development has since been shelved.
