New - How can I optimize performance?

Featured Replies

Hello all, I'm Paradoxical and am new to flight simulators.

I was wondering how I could optimize Flight Simulator X to run at a better frame rate. At the moment I'm only getting an average of 10, and wondered if there was anything I could do to possibly improve it to around 25.

Here are my current specs (if you could estimate how much better my performance could improve):

Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family,

Pentium® Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.GHz (2 CPUs),

3072MB RAM,

I will appreciate any help,

Thanks

What kind of display card do you have? What operating system are you running?

A good place to start is reading http://forum.avsim.n...-guide-for-fsx/.

Do a search for FSX tweaking and you'll find lots of information, some good, some not so good.

Start with the link above and go from there.

This is a laptop, correct?

If so, I am guessing you probably have an Intel 3000, or 4000 integrated graphics chip?

This is not good for any kind of gaming, let alone a demanding simulator like FSX.

I am afraid you may have to invest in (if you don't already own one) a more powerful desktop PC, or gaming laptop (Alienware; ASUS) in order to get decent

FSX performance. FSX is like "Crysis"... Badly coded and resource hungry... And you need something along the lines of an i7 @ 3.0 GHZ+ to start to see adequate FSX performance,

unfortunately.

Have you heard about a thing called Search (upper right corner of this window)? Works like a charm.

Seems the OP is new to Avsim. and FSX, and your rudeness is uncalled for. I see you only joined a few months ago yourself, one would hope you received friendly reply's, not like the reply you just submitted.

Shame on you.

i run FSX on a laptop and my specs are vary similar to yours, i didn't get a better performance by using everything in both Word Not Allowed's and *******' guide (if anything it went worse)

someone told me to use "Highmemfix=1" and "usepools=0" (or something similar, you will find them in Word Not Allowed's guide)

after i applied them my FSX was running smoother and i was achieving 30 frame rates consistently

In my experience, these are the only real tweaks you need, regardless of hardware (low end, high-end).

If you have more than 2 GBs of memory the "High Memory Fix" allows FSX to use whatever amount you have (more than 2 GBs), and the

Buffer Pools fix works beautifully for video cards with more than 1 GB of VRAM (video memory). All the other tweaks are a waste of time

and have been documented by Phil Taylor (former head of Aces Studios) to be outdated and/or redundant.

Back on Topic:

If the OP is getting 10 FPS...

I have a feeling it is because he/she has an integrated graphics chip, so no amount of tweaking is going to help. FSX may be CPU

dependant, but it still requires a decent GPU since it is a video game, and all demanding video games need graphical processing power

that integrated graphics chips just do not have, unfortunately :(

Mhm, yes, I do have an integrated chip.

I fiddled with some of the graphics settings and I'm managing a steady 15 FPS with quite disappointing terrain.

Word Not Allowed's Guide is the best place to start. NickN has a lot of setup help here:

Proper setup will help a lot but cannot overcome a low power computer.

Have fun

Dave

Word Not Allowed's guide is the best place to start, I agree with Dave.

That's not very newbie friendly. Take a deep breath guys.

Paradoxical, without leading you into any world of tweaking, I will tell you this: you will never get FSX to 25fps with sharp terrain on your machine.

You must understand that FSX needs a powerful computer. The best thing you could do right now is install FS9 and enjoy it quite well, without pushing boundaries in it. There are heaps of good aircraft for it, though should be careful with it too, FS9 + Addons also needs quite a lot of computing power.

Just a friendly warning: this is a forum about FSX discussions. Anything else, FS9, hardware, new computer, what is needed, etc, take it to the appropriate forum. Thanks.

If you want to keep tweaking FSX, welcome here, and be sure to read my guide.
