X-Plane 10 Tree Lines and Farms Scenery released

Featured Replies

Today I have something new for X-Plane 10. A scenery, which tries to improve the look of the less “populated” areas of the default (or HD Mesh) Global Scenery, namely the agricultural areas, grasslands and pastures (the place, which can be wast and empty … especially in regions like the US Mid West etc.).

This new scenery will add random tree lines along many-many roads and some – hopefully – well placed farms in the landscape (at least in the continental USA and Europe). After the download, you might be quite surprised by how some regions of the Global Scenery look (as a starter, try some random location in the US Mid West).

To learn more and download this freeware (while considering a donation), follow this link:

Or see some before / after comparisons (use the slide show in picasa, then you will see the difference quite "easily")

Alpilotx, is any one at Laminar working on tropical textures ? Hawaii does not look right, especially the trees.

If I recall it correctly, that climate zone is on the list ... but don't ask me when exactly it will get its "treatment".

Awesome improvement to XP10 but can I please ask why every flight simulator out there today has such oversized trees?? I know some trees are big but just about every tree I can see in those images is nearly three times higher than all the buildings. I really hope they address this in XP10 oneday it's one of my pet peeves in FSX. Makes flying at 1000ft feel wayyyy too low =(.

Ok, thanks !

What are you working on at the moment ?

They look OK to me...

One thing I'd say though is that I'd rather have fewer larger trees to fill space than lots of little ones, if only from a framerate point of view.

Fair enough but I'm still waiting for something to justify the money I spent on this hex-core Sandybridge-E processor. So far it's looking like it was a poor investment choice =(.

Wow outstanding work Andras!!!

The treelines are using the XP10 default forests, the same artwork, the same forest definitions (FOR files). The latter are responsible for the size / distribution / composition etc. of the forests .... and thats where the sizes come from. They are not a perfect representation of real life sizes, but neither are they 3-times off! Indeed, they are a little bit larger, which cones from the idea (from many years ago), that - like turner112 points out - with bigger trees, we need less of them to create the impression of dense forests.

Like many things, its planned to do an overhaul to the forest representation (maybe even redoing the textures), but like many things, this is in a long queue with other artwork improvements ... (especially, as its not highly critical, and most - understandably not all - people have no big complaints in this area).

What are you working on at the moment ?

I have some interesting ideas ... but I am - at the moment - not actively working on anything (I am not a full time Laminar employee - just a ... lets call it a "freelancer"), as I need some time for other things (and anyways, summer is usually my less X-Plane active time). But as I told, I have plans, and I think, I will pick up work on some of them in autumn ...

And by the way, so you don't confuse thing: textures are not my part. They are done by someone else.
