Select a Runway for Landing

Featured Replies

I'm flying the PMDG 737. I normally do a full flight programming everything into FMC. I've noticed that Vox ATC will choose a random runway at the airport I fly into. Usually it isn't the one I've programmed into the FMC. I like to select the runway I will use to land so that I am not in a mad rush towards the end of the flight to change all of my settings that I've prepared in the aircraft for the runway I've selected when VOX ATC vectors me to a different runway.

Is there a way to select the runway and STAR you want to land on in VOX ATC.

Also, I'm having problems with VOX ATC not speaking to me towards the landing stage. I usually have to say "Louisville Tower Southwest 1617"

That gets ATC talking. Its like the ATC program is hanging up, and I have to say something and then they remember what they are supposed to do! But Ive had times where I was flying IFR and I was never vectored to a runway. I just kept flying right past the airport.

Any suggestions?

I was going to ask the same question. I don't think it's a random runway (could be wrong) but i think its based on the wind direction and which is the active runway at that time.

I also like to pre program the FMC (PMDG 737 also) otherwise i find the aircraft getting away from me and i have to much to do in the final stages.

Any help will be much appriciated.

Yes, it does select an active based on wind direction. I would like to know what the active of the destination airport is, but since I use REX for weather, it doesn't tell me wind direction. It just injects real world weather. I could just check the weather on yahoo or something since I use real weather. I need to look into that.

But the problem with that is that wind could change by the time I check the weather and arrive at the destination airport. hmm.

VoxATC picks the RW for takeoff and/or landing based on the Weather currently in FSX at the Airport at the time and airport AFCAD file(s) set in the airport scenery files.

the AFCAD files are the one that have the RW in use settings and approach(s), radio frequency for the ILS,VOR,LOC,etc and what RW are active and used for Takeoff and landing, there are other stuff that the AFCAD files are responsible of. VoxATC uses those files and weather and picks the RW for landing/takeoff.

based on RW in use and flight route , your SID/STAR/Transition are selected (like in real life, usually).

VoxATC pretty much picks for you the Approach based on the weather and the approach availability that the Airport Scenery AFCAD had set.

one can select a different RW / Approach if he wishes (like I do) by hitting "0" on the VoxATC window panel and selecting a different RW/Approach based on what you

configured in the FMC. this could be done after you were assigned an Approach by VoxATC.

I usually look up the metar for the destination airport before departure and program the FMC with the appropriate runway etc then. Unless weather at destination changes during the flight you will be set up correctly.

I usually get ready straight after top of descent to tune into the destination ATIS for a final weather update to check for any last minute changes. If you use Aivlasofts EFB you can quickly check a destination metar and update your route in that if necessary. All that remains then is to select a different runway in use and STAR and execute the updated route in the FMC.

If you struggle a little with getting everything done in flight, you might want to try sitting on the ground and fully programming your FMC, then changing your destination runway and STAR repeatedly until you can do it quickly and comfortably. When you then introduce that element to a live flying cockpit it won't seem so intimidating and you will wonder why you ever thought it difficult :P. At least, that's how it worked for me! Good luck :)
