June 27, 200421 yr Jim,I thought that was the problem on my system as well, granted I use Nvidia for my card, went thru three differant drivers, after complete and total uninstalls, and still got the problems, but guess what, finally found the problem, it was scenery believe it or not, and what seems to be even funnier, is it is PAYWARE scenery, go figure, I have been trying to do a flight from Oslo to London Heathrow for a couple of days now, well I am right in the middle of a 5 hour flight between PHNL and Burbank and everything is working fine, it seems that the Aerosoft Denmark and Scandanavian sceneries seem to be causing the problem, I am going to disable them and see what happens on my next flight.
June 27, 200421 yr I hear you JB. Keep trying. I hope you get it worked out. As for me, I have decided, I'm going to go back to ATI Catalyst 4.2 drivers.Jim
June 28, 200421 yr Hi Guys,I've got the very same problem for a while now, complete with the Terrain.dll and G3d.dll errors... getting a little sick of it now.Actually it al started when my good old FS 5200 card died and I bought a ATI Radeon 9800SE, great card, works fine with all the newest games... but only fs9..I'll try the cat 4.2 drivers too, lets keep each other up-to-date!Kind regards,Rick
June 28, 200421 yr Hi Rick,Sounds good. The bad part about having to use 4.2's is some loss of Image Quality(IQ). For instance, with the 4.6's the logo's on the side of the AI planes from MyTraffic 2004 were sharp. Now they look blurry. But I've got stability, no crashing in .dll's now, and my Anti-Aliasing doesn't poop out on me.Jim
June 28, 200421 yr Hey Jim,Same here, finaly stability!I think it's worth losing a bit quality for stability!Rick
June 28, 200421 yr I have an ati9600 radeon 128Mband have instability with both cat 4.2 and 4.6 drivers:when I resize or switch from windowed to fullscreen and viceversa, the screen would became black for 10 secs before crashing on one of the modules.I've noticed if you (while the screen is black before crashing)check multitexturing ON (if it was off) or turn it off (if it was ON)it solves the problem showing the panel back again!so it doesn't matter if you multitexturing on or off; just reverse it to fix it and avoid the crash. It seems like the graphics card can't work things out leaving the screen black ending with a timeout and eventually a crash.I've noticed my system would be more stable with multitexturing OFF.Unfortunately I should keep it on as most of my textures/addon are dxt3......I'm currently using cat 4.6 and fastwrites ON.I tried turning fastwrites OFF and it seems stable but unfortunately much slower (a lot of stuttering!) and once I had crash to desktop with no error message (so I switched back to FASTWRITES ON).by the way I Did apply the terrain.cfg fix to avoid CTD!!!!if anyone is experiencing similar problems or have found a very stable solution please let me know as I'm getting really bored now!:-)RLuca
June 28, 200421 yr hmmm :-( are you sure about the cooling of the Card? that was my problem with my last videocard.. it just gets to hot.Check it to be sure and otherwise try unistalling all drivers with a driver cleaning program (availible on www.driversguide.com) and then reinstall the 4.2... maybe it's worth trying, Good luck!Rick
June 28, 200421 yr Hey Luca,Well, I've found that with ATI that I've always had trouble switching between Full-Screen and Windowed mode. So I just try to always leave it in Full-Screen mode and then I have no problems.--------------------------------->Hey Jim,>>Same here, finaly stability!>I think it's worth losing a bit quality for stability!>>RickHello Rick,I agree. Stability is more important and the 4.2's give that to me, and it would seem to you also. I'll bet that others are also discovering that the 4.2 are what to stick with for now. I can't help but wonder why problems's with the 4.6's are starting to appear. Could it be because FS2004 is now in the Summer Season? Maybe there is a bug in the 4.6's with the summer(textures?) in FS2004. I don't know. Anyway, I made a post in the Rage3D forum asking that this please be looked into. And that most everyone on the forum here posted that they did not like the 4.3's, 4.4's, or 4.5's, now problems are starting to become apparent with the 4.6's, and to please fix the issues so that we FS2004 users can finally use something besides 4.2's. I submitted a bug report to ATI when the 4.3's were released and the issue still has not been fixed in my eyes. I am thinking about submitting a bug report again to ATI in addition to the post I made on the Rage3D forum.I recommend that you and anyone else reading this that is having problems with the 4.6's submit a bug report to ATI stating the issues with the 4.6's and ask that we finally get some newer (than 4.2) drivers that are good for FS2004. At this point I have very serious doubts that the 4.7's will fix the issues.Regards,Jim
June 28, 200421 yr what cat version and graphics card are u using onetinsoldier?in case of 9600, do you have fastwrites on or off?thanksLuca
June 28, 200421 yr I already have a temperature sensor software telling me dimm/gpu/cpu/hd temps; what's *hot* gpu value in centigrades? it's around 50-53 degress all the time right now.RLuca
June 28, 200421 yr >what cat version and graphics card are u using>onetinsoldier?>in case of 9600, do you have fastwrites on or off?>>thanks>Luca>>According to a Sticky Post on the Rage3D forum, Fast Write should be left off, unless perhaps your system is quite old. I take it as essentially a strong recommendation from ATI, or at least people knowledgeable about what your video card settings should be. So I leave my Fast Writes off nowadays.------------------------------------------Fast Write.Often more trouble than it
June 28, 200421 yr thanks Jim,I have an ati 9600 128Mb and heard it was advisable to keep fastwrites on on the 9600 family...at the moment I'm back with cat4.2, fastwrites off.It seems pretty stable; unfortunately as soon as I disabled fastwrites fs9 started stuttering; the framerate doesn't drop but there are several micropauses, like 4-5 every 5-6 seconds. I'm sure it's due to fastwrites.RLuca
June 28, 200421 yr Roger Luca,If it's advised to have them on for the 9600 then you should probably follow the advice. Obviously you need to in order to get the best out of your card.If you read the posts above and earlier in the this thread you'll see that I was using 4.6's but have gone back to 4.2's. From where I'm sitting I don't think the 4.7's are going to solve the issues I have observed. Sigh :-roll (at ATI). Oh well, here's to hoping the 4.8's are good for FS2004.Jim

July 2, 200421 yr Hello again,I've had a bit of luck with fastwrites OFF, in fact the micropauses I'm having with FW off are enormously reduced using omegadrivers.I'm still using omega based on cat 4.6I remember you advicing to use cat 4.2 rather than 4.6 because smoother.Would you sugges then to move to omega based on 4.2 rather than keeping the latest?thanksLuca
