How do I eliminate an ADDON airport scenery from FS9?

Featured Replies

After successfully loading various large airport scenery addons I failed to make a FedEx Station addon to Yakatat Alaska in my FS9. So I gave up and deleted the download files from my FS9 Addon Scenery and also deleted them from my FS9 Scenery Library.

Now when I load the FS9 simulator a window pops up saying

"Scenery.cfg ERROR. Local Scenery Directory (Addon Scenery\FedEx PAYA\Scenery) In Scenery Area .049 Not Found. Click OK to Continue"

So I click OK and up comes the next window saying

"Scenery .cfg File Error. Invalid Remote Scenery Path in Scenery Area .055." Click to Continue

So I do and everything loads up the default FS9 Yakatat Alaska whiich works fine.

How do I get rid of those Error Windows? I have searched everywhere I can think of.

your scenery isnt properly configured in the scenery cfg or was misplaced that the scenery.cfg cannot detect your folder path.

Try this: go to scenery.cfg in fs9 main directory (open with notepad) and scroll down to layer 049, delete all the strings related to FedEx PAYA and close it. Start FS9 and go to "Scenery Library" click "Add Scenery" and browse to your new scenery folder. click ok and restart FS9. you may want to re install the new scenery just to make sure.

Hope this helps

sorry, but you lost me on that one. When I go to fs9 scenery config why or how would I use notepad to open something? rightclicking isn't doing it so I'm in over my head.

If you go to the Scenery Library in the sim is there an entry for FedEx PAYA?

If so, highlight it and click on the "Delete Area" button.

Then shut down the sim, restart the sim and see if that entry is still there.

The scenery.cfg is a file in the root FS9 folder that stores all the data for the Scenery Library.

All of the files in FS with the .cfg extension are text files and you can edit them with Notepad, which is a program that comes with Windows. Do not use Wordpad or Word to do this as they will add formatting that will not work with FS9.

Before you edit any of these files make a backup copy that you can revert to if things get messed up by your edits, it happens to the best of us.

Quraisy! is instructing you on making an edit to the scenery.cfg.

Some of his/her info is a bit misleading as there is a difference between [Area..049] and layer=049.

They may or may not be the same thing.

If you are uncomfortable making the hand edits you should be able to fix things in the Scenery Library.

I think I have it deleted out of my FS9 Library list because I remember doing that and I can't find any reference to FedEx Paya anywhere.

Where do I find the stairway down into the fs9 root directory and should I be carrying a sidearm?

John

The root FS9 folder is the folder that contains the FS9.exe file.

The location of that folder is dependent on the operating system, or OS, that you are using.

It will probably be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9.

If you are using a 64 bit OS it might be C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9.

When you get to the root FS9 folder you should find a scenery.cfg and an oldscenery.cfg.

If you find a newscenery.cfg then before doing anything else you should start the sim and shut it down. The newscenery.cfg should go away when you do that.

Once you find the scenery.cfg and open it with Notepad you will see it consists of section similar to...

[Area.001]

Title=Default Terrain

Texture_ID=1

Layer=1

Active=TRUE

Required=TRUE

Local=Scenery\World

Remote=

Find the sections for [Area.049] and [Area.055]. Copy those sections and paste them in your next reply so we can see them.

I found the root fs9 file in the main fs9 folder labeled simply "scenery" with a page icon rather than a folder icon. there was no "new" or "old scenery" anywhere. The "scenery" file was readable in Notepad and looked exactly like you portrayed but only went up to "Area .038". and no further.

I looked everywhere and even tried the search program window which found an '

"fs9.exe" in my EZ Scenery Library but nowhere else and no Areas above .038

FYI, my OS is Windows 7 and is 64 bit.

Another thing....my fs9 Library window list with all the red X's has some empty spaces including the red X,s but nothing printed saying what they are afilliated with. Everything seems to work including Yakatat in it's default form but those two error windows at load up time are a concern to me as well as irritating.

any ideas at thispoint?

First thing is to click on the Start button, then select the Control Panel.

Then select "Folder Options", if you only see about 8 choices first click on "View by" and select Large or Small Icons.

When you have "Folder Options" open click on the "View" tab.

Remove the check from "Hide extensions for known file types" and click "OK".

Now open the root FS9 folder and right-click on the FS9.exe, then click on "Run as administrator".

Now right-click on the scenery.cfg and verify there is not a check in the "Read-only" box. If there is, then remove it and click on "OK".

Now start the sim, let it settle, shut it down, restart it and check the Scenery Library.

Ok, Joe, I carried out each step of your instructions and confirmed that there is no check mark in the read only box of the scener.cfg.......and then the startup-shut down -startup and still have the error boxes regardin areas .049 and .055 when I load up.

HOWEVER....when I selected "Run as Administrator" a window came up asking "authorization to allow changes to the computer". I said yes and then did the box look-see on scenery.cfg and then the sim started up without the error windows. But if I don't jump through the hoops regarding "run as administrator" and then "allow changes to be made to the computer" I get the error windows at start-up.

When I go to Scenery Library there is no trace of FedEX PAYA .

Everything still works in the sim including the default version of PAYA but with those error windows at startup I am reluctant to attempt downloading any additional addon airport sceneries. I still can't find any areas in "Scenery.cfg" higher than .038 so where did .049 and .055 come from?

what shall I try next? by the way, I appreciate your efforts and I am learning a lot.

John

Hello John

Question when you deleted those scenery file which way did you do it? Scenery library entries and then the files in your addon scenery folder? If you did it the other way that's what caused the problem it sounds to me that's what you did.

Been there done that more than once lol. I could not solve the problem so I ended up re-installing FS9.1 But most will no recomend that you do that but when it comes down to it, it's up to you mate........John

groan...... yes, I deleted the folders in the fs9 Addon files and then realized that I had better do it in the Library too. ....hope I don,t have to go that extreme (a complete re-install) but maybe there is still a surgical solution.

Do you launch FS9 from a desktop shortcut?

If not, right-click on the FS9.exe and select "Send to >" Desktop (create shortcut).

Either way, now right-click on the FS9 desktop shortcut and select "Properties".

On the "Shortcut" tab click on the "Advanced..." button.

Add a check to "Run as administrator" and click "OK".

I believe this will now let you run FS9 as "administrator" every time without having to accept the "changes" every time, though I could be wrong and you might have to do it every time.

My User Account is an Administrator account and I don't have these issues.

Now navigate to C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9 and check for a scenery.cfg. If it is there, rename it to scenery.bak.

Now try the sim and report back what happens.

After getting to my name and clicking it there is nothing called "AppData or Roaming" ie no route to fs9 unless I go around through the normal C:\Programsx86\microsoft Games\fs9\scenery.cfg

But I did right click the FS9 desktop shortcut\properties\advanced\administrator\OK .

BULLETIN!!

I just now checked it out doing the Administrator bit and it loaded up with a quick click on the " authorized change" line and no error windows showed up and all is well!!

I'm happier than a tornado in a trailer park....

Thanks for the great help and patience

My bad, should have had you make another change in "Folder Option".

Go back to the "Folder Options" "View" tab and check (radio button actually) "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

This will allow you to see the "AppData" folder.
