METAR coverage?

Featured Replies

I have been to the OpusFSX website and have a question concerning one of the mentioned features of OpusFSX:

  • No more METAR voids or unrealistic METAR data morphing

If OpusFSX delivers realtime weather, is this not done via collecting info through METAR stations?

And if so, will OpusFSX not have voids in some places around the world with sparse METAR coverage?

Ok, apparently I should have read a bit further down that you are not using METARs as a basis for live weather.

So I guess that you are getting your weather data from another source(s), which is not mentioned?

Now I am confused, on another page you state this:

Live Weather Engine uses live METAR data to give instant realistic and detailed weather updates

Is the difference between your weather engine and others that yours are just better somehow at interpreting METARs faster?

Basicaly the engine is very accurate as far as weather reporting and it does fill in the holes between stations. The depiction is incredible, you can see fronts and distant weather and still tune fsx ATIS to get weather report for your airport. It is also the best one yet for overcast and fog, if your airport is clouded in you can't see it. Right now they are working on some things to improve winds aloft and smoothing on the way up and down. Also their engine injects the weather and updates in an instantaneous fashion with no stutters, just boom, heres your weather !

It's called WINTER, the heuristic weather interpolation algorithm. We still have phase two development to complete next year which will improve the weather depiction in vids such as mid Atlantic even better than the algorithms does now. Basically, at present the LWE extends the weather horizon until it has enough METARs to make a good guess at the weather in your local (992km x 992km) area. The upgraded WINTER will extend each horizon to check the weather and meteorological conditions in each direction NSEW, then interpolate the weather accordingly.

We also have over 7000 met centres listed around the world and not all of them are on land!

We are now working on adding new weather server options, including Vatsim, adding a historic weather option, improving the simulated winds aloft, and giving an option to download and use the GRIB upper winds/temps forecast data (true winds aloft if you like).

Then will come the more interesting Weather Smoothing (more to it than it sounds), this option will smooth out those sudden METAR changes, cloud patterns, changing weather fronts, etc. it will also monitor your descent and make sure your have 100% accurate weather conditions for landing whether you've asked for it or not.

The will come the WINTER upgrade, client side LWE operation (NOT on performance grounds since the LWE has NO adverse effect on your sim, none at all), the client side op is ready for the LW Assistant upgrade giving you a pseudo weather radar type facility and any additional support you need for flight planning.

We will also be capturing more 3D accel data to extend the DHM effects, including data recorded on Rotorcraft etc.

We have many other enhancements listed, Live Traffic for instance. Basically, development will be ongoing and continuous.

Stephen,

It sounds really promising and I will follow this closely, well in fact I have already purchased OpusFSX.

Actually I think that creating a weather addon in FSX is the most difficult task of all. So many variables to consider.

I also think that the VFR simmers are perhaps easier to satisfy than e.g. the long haul, trans-atlantic and trans-pacific simmers, so I really hope that you can deliver all this.

No problem at all.

We already know how it will all work, have conducted some tests, prepared some of the software in readiness ... Just a case of finalising the design and coding the algorithms. As far as high flyers are concerned we will just provide the real weather and let them fly in it.

How I like that last sentence ;)

That last sentence, and the inability of others to be able to do it correctly have been one of the reasons why I have abandoned my NGX, and other large aircraft. I couldn't stand the fact that I would be flying the same flight level with others but have totally different winds, and winds that didn't match in the least with that it was suppose to show.

I think that the release of the upper level winds, and the coming release of the PMDG T7 in about 12 years will make me a real happy camper...lol
