July 19, 200421 yr I just got FS 2004. Good game and a large upgrade since the last one I bought.I love to fly around my beloved Rocky Mountains in Colorado. To that end, I got the 38m mesh from Justin Tyme and the Colorado Lakes Project files to enhance the view. But unless I fly in winter, my Rockies aren't, well, rocky. They're tree-covered all the way to 14,000 feet. Long's Peak at 14,000 doesn't have a tree on it after 11,000 feet. Is there a way to make it so that the Rockies just more/all stark rocks after around 11k feet and not covered in vegitation?
July 19, 200421 yr Flew from KORD to KSNA yesterday. I've done this trip in real life many times on UNITED. What I don't see is the "circle" type farm fields (Nebraska?) and I certainly don't see the Rockies as I see them from a real 757. What can we do to get the real scenery for this trip out West? Stan
July 20, 200421 yr You need some good terrain mesh - to rock your simulator a bit more!Get completely free download - usa 38.2 m terrain - here it tell you how to get it:http://www.fsrapid.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=40follow this project - and by the end of august 04 - you will have all the usa meshed at 38.2 m - completely free.ray
July 20, 200421 yr Hello,Well Ray, he did say he has Justin Tyme's 38.2 DEM Mesh, which is a very nice mesh IMHO. I am not an expert though, so I wonder if maybe this would possibly be a Landclass issue? You would probably know better about that than me.Blackradar, whatever the case, I recommend a couple of things. Open up your FS9.cfg file and change the following parameter to a value of 20. I have the FSGenesis Mesh for the entire Continetal US and it is my understanding that a value of 20 is the best setting for it, not 19, not 21... but 20.TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=20Elsewhere you might also see this simply referred to as TMVL.The other thing I have I also have installed is the FSGenesis USA Landclass v1.07a. Do you have that installed? If so, I'm wondering, do your Colorado Rockies look like the following? Do you think the vegetation looks like it comes up as high as it is in your sim?Regards,Jimhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/84740.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/84741.jpg
July 20, 200421 yr FsFreeWare:Perhaps some more explanation about the differences between the meshes could help demonstrate why your mesh could help? I've used Justin's meshes before and always found they mapped the ground pretty well. The issue is where FS "sets" the treeline. In the Rockies it should be 10-11k feet - after that, only ground grasses and moss generally grows. So flying past the mountains I climb and seeing green textures at 13,000 feet just bothers me. Interestingly enough, I don't play FS to fly a plane - I play it to go to the places I love when I just can't get there in person.Jim:What season was that screenshot taken? Spring?I don't know if there's a lot of difference between the default landclass and your screenshots - unless you took that with summer textures. If that's the case, then there's a difference. And I have TVML already set at 20. The first thing I did when I bought it was to find the recommen ded .cfg file changes. :)
July 20, 200421 yr I do use FS Genesis for flight's over the Mt. West area, but havn't used any added landclass. I do prefer "fall", usually late Oct. or early November to get rid of the "too green" look.L.Adamson
July 20, 200421 yr I can see Longs Peak out my back window and you are correct that it does not have vegetation to the top. I use the 38M mesh and the US Landclass and the Rockies look very realistic in FS9 - much like the pics posted in this thread. I think it was the landclass that really did it for me but both are critical. Good luck!David
July 20, 200421 yr Hmmm, I have US Landclass and I have circle farms in FS9. They look pretty cool in Eastern CO.David
July 20, 200421 yr Hi;ye - miss that bit he has mesh already installed - in that case - there is no point in change it - other than Alaska - as this one uses the latest 60 m ned :-smile12 .land class could help - get better - - and perhaps - if you are still using default textures - replacements can also give benefits.ray
July 20, 200421 yr >Jim:>>What season was that screenshot taken? The first thing I did when>I bought it was to find the recommen ded .cfg file changes. >:)Hi Blackradar,That was taken with todays date. I always fly with the real-world date. I'm not sure how much difference it make as far as making the Rockies seem more rocky, but I am not using default textures. Probably not much, as I still have a tendency to think maybe the Landlclass makes somewhat of difference here.Anyway, the textures I have installed are FScene textures by Ruud Faber. They are fairly expensive, and I don't know that they made a lot of difference for these shots. But they make a fairly good bit of difference in a lot of areas. You might want to have a look at my guide in the 'Tip and Tricks' subsection of this forum titled 'OTS's Guide To a Great Looking FS2004'.Cheers,JimP.S. I highly recommend you get the FSGenesis Landclass to compliment your mesh. ;)
July 20, 200421 yr Speaking of Landclass - does it make a large difference?I noticed there was a landclass beta on the freeware portion of FS Genesis - what's the difference between that and the US Landclass that's for sale?
July 20, 200421 yr David,I look at Long's Peak right off my deck. In fact I just came in off the deck after I let my dog out. Where are you located in the front range?BobWestminster,CO
July 20, 200421 yr Yes it does. Landclass determines what texture get painted to any given mesh tile. The more detailed the landclass, the more complex (and realistic) the appearance of the landscape becomes.
July 20, 200421 yr In addition to all of the suggestions above, check out "cliffs.zip" and "2004_wood_desert.zip" in the file library - they provide enhanced textures for mountains, wooded areas, etc.FWIW, I use FSGenesis 38m mesh and landclass and USA Roads (plus the texture update "nuroads10.zip") and the texture updates above, and I've been VERY pleased with all of them.
July 20, 200421 yr One word....RealSceneI use the older version and have had excellent results. The peaks are more jaged. However, mountains like Pikes Peak are the correct shape, but there is grass all the way to the top (14,110 feet). The mountains in Rocky Mountain National park are rendered more correct with regards to the "rocks."ScottFAA Certified Flight Instructor - KCOS
