Finally, after three years of using a crappy 22" Iiyama monitor, it's time for a new one. I've already decided about the size; 27 inches. But I can't decide about the resolution. I'm tending towards a 1080p monitor, simply because I know 1440p - despite it looking beautiful - is not worth it because there's a big performance loss. I'd rather have 30 FPS solid. So I have two options:

1. Buy a 27 inch 1080p LED monitor

2. Buy a 27 inch 1440 LED monitor and run FSX in 1080p (if that looks fine on a 1440p monitor), and having the additional option of 1440p that I might use in games that will actually run it and in the future in a new flightsim platform that'll run it fine.

Advice is appreciated, thanks.

I think if you're going w/ 27" screen size you should definitely go w/ 1440p resolution. Certainly your graphics card will have zero problem pushing the 3,686,400 pixels involved as long as the nV driver supports it, which surely it must by now. Going from 22" to 27" at the same 1080p resolution will look pretty pixelated by comparison, so yes, go for 1440p if you want some visual 'wow' to be a reality w/ your new screen. I'm running 1920x1200 w/ an ancient gtx 280 and I have no problems running adequate frame rate provided I'm not in scenery beyond what my aged Q9650 can crank out.

Hi Arjen,

I recently upgraded from a 24" Eizo to a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I must say that running at 2560 x 1440 as opposed to 1920 x 1080 makes a huge difference in image fidelity, especially as far as airport lighting is concerned. I have a NVIDIA GTX 580 graphics card and am able to run everything at very high settings with my fps locked to 30:

I have read that Dell also make a very decent monitor capable of running at 2560 x 1440 at a much lower cost than the Apple Cinema Display.

Cheers,

Jerome

I JUST made the switch to a 27inch 1080P display 2 weeks ago.

Personally, with a high quality Asus or like panel, 1080P is truly gorgeous even on 27inches. The one that I have is the VE278.

I went from the Dell 23 inch to the Dell 27 inch 2560 and it was worth every penny. I was a bit concerned about FPS drop with my 560ti but there wasn't any !! . Run it at 2560 resolution, it transforms FSX. I was looking at the Dell 30 inch but at close to £1000 I could not afford it. The 27" is great compromise .

Doesn't it look pixelated at all then? In that case I was looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236302

Only thing is I heard about Asus monitors is that they don't work at POST and don't work in BIOS...?

I'm sure 1440 will look "wow" but isn't there a huge FPS drop compared to 1080p? Maybe you could test for me running FSX in 1080 on your 1440p monitor and see the FPS difference. I'm now happy being able to achieve 30 FPS locked pretty much always and if it drops back to 20-25 FPS looking at microstuttering again, then I think it's not worth it for me personally. Also a 1440p monitor comes at nearly double the price, my mom won't even allow me to buy that lol! Addionally, I can't afford it when you're 17 without a job. LOL

Was your Dell 1080p? A bit strange then that there isn't any FPS drop at all with 1440p. You mind testing it for me? First run FSX in 1080p unlimited FPS, then 1440p unlimited FPS and see the difference. Thanks!

I'm running FSX on a 23.6" Philips monitor at 1080p. Here's what I've got:

Doesn't it look pixelated at all then? In that case I was looking at this one:

Don't forget 'looking pixelated' is a function of pixel density AT a specific viewing distance. Throw in 'pixel pitch' for another minor factor as well. If you are sitting very close to a 27" screen then having 1440p will absolutely look less pixelated, however move the 27" screen away from you and you won't notice the difference between 1080p and 1440p as much. So, decide how far you want to be sitting from the screen. The advantage of sitting closer is the sense of having a wider field of view, which you most assuredly will have when you sit closer.

I'm sitting around 3 feet (or 1 meter) from my monitor... Still I'm considering 1440p because paul123 said there's no performance drop compared to 1080p whatsoever, this confused me a little. People always tend to give conflicting information!

I just went from a 32 inch @ 1080P to a 30 inch @ 2560x1600 and there is NO comparison... Once I saw 2560x1600 for a split second I couldn't go back... Go for the additional resolution, I have not seen any performance hit at all. None...

"Once you go ultra HD, you never go back!" :Big Grin: Are you 100% sure about there being NO performance hit AT ALL? Because some say there is quite an FPS drop. How else do you explain the lower FPS from 3 screens? More pixels=less performance...

No difference mate

PMDG 737 at EGBB active runway, all sliders maxed apart from water, traffic at 30%

2560 x 1440 26 FPS with FRAPS

1920 x 1080 26 FPS

No difference, tried it at different airports for you.

Paul

I sit around the same distance as well.

At 3' you would probably hardly notice a difference. Maybe others can chime in here. I sit closer to 2' from my 24" screen, so at 2' I would want a 1440p screen. I'm quite happy w/ my 1920x1200 screen though and notice no pixelation even at 2', but this resolution is a little better than 1080p and it's a 24" screen.

As for conflicting information--that may be an illusion on your part from not defining your questions better ;o) There is absolutely a performance impact going from 1080p to 1440p, however this is relative to the hardware involved. I'd probably notice a hit w/ my graphics card which is 4+ years old now, doubtful you will.
