November 27, 201213 yr Looks like we're getting tours of cities in Alaska now. I like this. Turn off the HUD and aerocache marker and make it more challenging. It also helps you sightsee around the cities. Enjoy. Thank you. November 27, 201213 yr I may skip this one. I like aerocaches that are landmarks or interesting terrain features. I don't much care for "random street address in Mukluk". It's too much like "somewhere on Lanai" which really annoyed me. I need a reason to fly. An interesting place to visit. If the destination isn't that interesting, the journey should be. For example, the glacier in the middle of Merrill Pass would be a good aerocache. A trip through interesting terrain, something interesting to look at in the middle, then fly through the rest of the pass. Probably a longer flight than most people would prefer, so too long for an aerocache. The downed Liberator ended up being a wild goose chase: they sent me to the wrong end of the island. At first I thought, "Oh cool, a search and rescue." Turns out not to be the case, and I found it by accident after turning on the aerocache marker. Keep in mind that I like to do these outside the aerocache hunt process. No range marker, no point of interest showing you exactly where the aerocache is from far away. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! November 27, 201213 yr Author This was a fairly short one I agree, but when these happen I still collect the cache. Then I check the job board at the airport and fly a cargo flight. That's what I did with this one. It only took a few minutes to collect the cache. Then I flew around the area, did a couple of touch and goes on the frozen river, then landed back at Girdwood. I then flew a cargo mission to Kalmbach which required me to either fly over the mountains or follow a valley. I did both. I flew the valley until I had enough altitude in the CC to get over the peaks and then direct to the destination. In transit, I flew over a couple of interesting towns and airports. I'll probably check them out too when I have some time. Thank you. November 27, 201213 yr Got a screen shot? There are a couple of large churches in Juneau that would make good aerocaches. The model and texture are very well done, and you can see them from a ways out on approach. They could "hide" the aerocache near the ground on the far side of the church from your approach path to make you circle it. Heck, if you haven't seen them yet, it's worth going for a look even without an aerocache. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! November 28, 201213 yr Author If you're asking if I got a screen shot of the towns, I did not. I just made a mental note to go back a free fly the area again. Just after crossing the mountains the land drops to sea level and there is a town with an airport that looked like something I would like to investigate. The same goes for some of the smaller strips around Kalmbach. This is in the area close to Wasilla where there are a lot of strips to land at. This is perfect territory for the Cub. Thank you.
