December 9, 201213 yr I've had a couple of years trouble free running FSX on my current PC in Win 7. I've now done a clean install of Win 8 - all drives formatted - and have installed FSX and the service packs - no other addons. The problem is that FSX hangs when I try to save a .cfg file or flight plan. Sometimes, even Task Manager hangs when trying to stop the application. I've only tried a few short flights and apart from one uiautomationcore.dll crash it seems OK otherwise. FSX is installed on a separate drive. I've tried various compatibility settings but no change. I've read numerous posts in various forums saying FSX runs well in WIn 8. Any ideas?
December 9, 201213 yr Make sure you are the Administrator. Check your Security Permissions for FSX and any app that works with it. Delete your FSX.cfg and let FSX build a new one.
December 9, 201213 yr I would leave the uiautomationcore.dll out of your fsx main folder as it could be the wrong version or it's trumping the uiautomationcore.dll in your Windows8 folder. Other than that and if the possible solutions from FTD1949 do not work, try downloading and running AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html and posting the error report here so we can maybe see what caused the crash. December 9, 201213 yr Author Thanks fro the advice guys. Changed the permissions to full control and deleted the fsx.cfg file. Just run the program and can now save settings. Don't know which of actions cured it but I sure as hell would never have thought about looking at permissions. Never had to do that on any program before!! I've deleted the vista version of uiautomationcore.dll from the FSX folder but not had time to do a flight of any length to prove that action. Will hopefully manage it in the next couple of days and will advise how it went. Thank god for forums...
December 10, 201213 yr Author Looks like I jumped the gun on the fix! Have just started FSX up and still the same problem of not being able to save/load cfg or flight plan. Out of interest I deleted the fsx.cfg file again and restarted FSX - no problems. Close it and restart and problem appears again. Seems to be something related to the cfg? I downloaded AppCrashView but it does not show FSX as having a problem. Presumably because it hasn't actually crashed; just hanging? It show Task Manager as having crashed when I try to close FSX via that route. I checked the permissions again and they are ok. Any ideas?

Did you right click fsx.exe OR the FSX icon and select Properties then click on Run as Administrator? That should be the permanent solution but then you can also right click it everytime you start up FSX and select Run as Administrator. So that might be the reason why you are having the problem when you close FSX then restart it and forget to say run as administrator. If you click on the link I provided for downloading the AppCrashView, look near the top and there's another program you can download called "WhatisHang" and it provides an analysis of why your application hanged. I personally have not used it so can't say it will work but it may help. If you had to go into the task manager to shutdown fsx, then you have a serious memory problem. Look in the post right next to yours from Koosh where I discuss memory related issues and how to fix. Hope this helps. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! December 10, 201213 yr What add on aircraft or other 3rd party add ons have you installed. I know the the LD 767 won't work for me with FSX and Win8. I have similar problems as you describe with it installed. Once I uninstalled it the problem went away. There is a version of uiautomationcore.dll floating around out there for Win8 If you Google FSX Win 8 crash fix I believe you will find it.
December 10, 201213 yr I have Win7 home premium and ran FSX. But my problems probaly stem from too many addon planes and sceneries. But, just a thought. Now that I have moved to Ohio from Texas and my computer has been locked in storage for 4 mo.s, I have lots of time to think about why things lock up after we reiinstall FSX. Is it possible that when you shut off the program or the computer, and turn it back on that the fs.config. reboots from the backup files in win 7 or the data safe files? Just a thought. I have had simillar happenings with other programs, and wonder if that might be the culprit. Anyone with more computer savy than me have an answer?
December 11, 201213 yr Author Hi guys. Thanks for all the advice but I may just have found the culprit by accident! I had problems installing some Win 8 updates so turned off the anti-virus. That cured the update problem. Just in case the updates had any bearing on the FSX issue I ran it and had no problems with saving flight plans and settings. As I still had the anti-virus turned off, I rebooted as per normal and tried FSX again - problems returned. This pointed to the antivirus as a possible cause. I'm using Bitdefender which appears to have three components to the anti-virus function - Auto-scan, On Access Scanning & Active virus Control. I'd turned all three off for the update. By a process of elimination I believe the problem was due to the Active virus Control - with this off FSX seems OK. I'll have to contact Bitdefender to see what can be done about this. Hopefully I can use FSX if I turn the Active Control off for the time being. Thanks for the help.

It could be an external program, like Internet Explorer going on the Internet and looking for updates. There are a lot of programs on your computer that decide to see if it's up-to-date. It could also be your anti-virus program (if you have one installed), that is making sure a virus is not entering your system as FSX calls different files. In regards to the jumping aircraft, I would post this question on the FSX forum. I know this is common when replaying a flight with fsx and don't think there's a solution. It only happens in external view. Some people have fixed this by locking the outside spot view. Best regards, Jim Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! March 3, 201313 yr I had the same problems last week, as per another thread in this Forum. My final decision, even having DCS World working perfectly ober Win8, was to revert back to Win7 Pro Home Premium 64 bit. Reinstalled FSX Gold GFWL edition, and all is running smooth as silk. Also, finally, I found the "perfect" match between my new system conf, Nvidia Inspector, and FSX Gold. It's probably the best performnace and quality I ever got from FSX the one I am experiencing now. Really weird, since I know of people running it on Win8 without any problem reports :-/ Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
