December 31, 201213 yr Before I reinstall, I thought I would check here to be sure nothing is wrong on the ASE end, or that some change has taken place in the pogram that might cause the following: When I try to start up ASE, i get an ASE error window whch states th following: "ASE has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." No solution has been offered. ASE has been working flawlessly for months until this problem suddenly appeard. Any ideas? Respectfully: RTH Edit: Tried to run setp and the "repair" function. It ran ok but I still have the probem.

December 31, 201213 yr Author I think I may have found my problem. I recently had memory problems (See "Computer crash miseries" in the hardware forum on AvSim by rhodges.) The conclusion was that two of the memory slots on my Motherboard were no longer working, yet the other two seemed to be OK. I removed one of my 4GB sticks (Bad slot), and installed the other in one of the two other slots, which are working with no problem. A new MB is needed, but I will probably leave it working as is with reduced memory until my next hardware upgrade if nothing else ugly raises its head. Is the problem that ASE now thinks I am running this on a new computer, or trying multiple computers? Strange that I don't remember this scenario when I upgraded to new memory, MB, and CPU some time ago, but maybe I am forgetting something? What can I do if this is the problem? Note that when I tried to repair, or reinstall, I never was asked for my purchase key. Thanks: RTH
December 31, 201213 yr Author Now let me add to this mystery: Many months, possibly years ago after upgrading from ASA to ASE, I never could get ASA to work again. I uninstalled and reinstalled it a number of times. When I entered my key, it was verified as ok, but as startup continued it would later tell me I did not have a valid key and would ask me to enter it again. If I am not mistaken, I made a post somewhere on the HiFi forums relative to this but we were never were able to resolve the problem. Being that ASE worked flawlessly, I deleted ASA and forgot the whole thing. ASE has worked fine for all this time up until now. Being that this was an upgrade from ASA to ASE, I thought maybe ASA was needed when I tried to reinstall ASE, so I did the following. 1. Uninstalled ASE again. All HiFi content was removed. 2. Installed ASA. To my surprise, it works flawlessly now. Maybe installing ASE hurt ASA's feeling in times past and it pouted. At any rate, it works now.. 3. Installed ASE. I still have the original problem I posted here, and it never asks for a key at startup (Does it see it already verified in ASA I wonder?).Note that I have not installed any ASE updates yet. Could this be the problem? To be continued: RTH Edit: Just did a search for the post I previously made relative to ASA not working. It was "ASA want play for me anymore" dated November 16, 2010 also by rhodges. Now two years later that problem went away and ASA works just fine, but I have the current issue with ASE
December 31, 201213 yr As I recall, you should have gotten a key with the email for your purchase although it's been so long since I did it that I really don't remember. If you are running Win7/Vista ASE creates a log in your appdata\roaming\Hifi\ase folder and you might see if that got started and gives any clues - otherwise I have no idea. The knowledgebase article simply suggests a re-install. All I can suggest is that you put in a support ticket with HiFi. DJ
December 31, 201213 yr It's not asking for the key during a reinstall because it's already in the registry. The program won't just crash if the key is bad--it'll tell you. Might be there's a problem with the data in the last weather download that's causing it to crash. You might try renaming the LastDownloaded.wx file and running it to force it to go get a new weather file... December 31, 201213 yr Bob is correct - after a bit of research I recall that the upgrade uses the same key ASA used... In addition to his suggestion you might try removing the entire ASE subdirectory from the path I mentioned, before re-installing, if you hadn't already done so. DJ
January 1, 201313 yr Author Please forgive my ignorance, but I need a little clarification relative to your advice. 1. The replies relative to my key make sense as I am useing my original key from my ASA purchase (which works now with ASA but did not at times in the past as I mentioned above). My assumption is that there is no issue relative to the key now with either ASA or ASE. 2. w6kd, you state "Might be there's a problem with the data in the last weather download that's causing it to crash. You might try renaming the LastDownloaded.wx file and running it to forceit to go get a new weather file..." I did a *.*.wx search and found a number of these files in my FlightSimulator X File folder. I renamed "Previous Flight.wx" to be "Previous Flight.xx" and tried to restart ASE. I still had my problem. I then temporarilly moved all of the ".wx" files from this folder to a new desktop folder and tried the same thing. Same results. Is the the "LastDownloaded.wx" file you mention, or am I completely in the wrong hanger? If so, where is the weather file I should be looking for? 3. DJ, you state "....try removing the entire ASE subdirectory from the path I mentioned, before re-installing, if you hadn't already done so." In my last attempt I did the following. a. Removed ASE with the Windows 7 Control panel remove protgrams provisions. b. Made suire all references were deleted (No HiFi folder, start/program entries, etc.) c. Reinstalled ASA (And it works fine much to my surprise based on my prrevious problem after installing ASE a couple of years age). d. Reinstalled ASE. Does this not remove the "entire ASE subdirectory" in question? I deleted the entire HIFI folder in my Program Files (x86) Folder which contained the ASE folder with all sub directories. Is there possibly another location I am missing somewhere that might be a problem file (ile. Application Data folder or the like?). I would think all of these would have been removed when I deleted with the windows provisions, but I am a bit over my head here. Thanks so much for the help. Have a happy new year! RTH
January 1, 201313 yr No, not all the subdirectories get deleted (usually) because they contain files that have been modified after the installation. The path you want to check is c:\users\(username)\appdata\roaming\Hifi\ase after the uninstall and make sure it's gone - if not, then delete it. DJ
January 2, 201313 yr Author Success! Thanks so much for the help DJ. Forgive me for overlooking the path. Deleting that ASE folder in the ....appdata\roaming\Hifi location and reinstalling ASE solved the problem. Of purely academic interest, ASA now works fine as well. I have no idea what the problem was there, but it is gone now. Respectfully: RTH No, not all the subdirectories get deleted (usually) because they contain files that have been modified after the installation. January 2, 201313 yr Commercial Member No, not all the subdirectories get deleted (usually) because they contain files that have been modified after the installation. The path you want to check is c:\users\(username)\appdata\roaming\Hifi\ase after the uninstall and make sure it's gone - if not, then delete it. DJ That is usually the key to a succesfull reinstall. Most issues get fixed deleting that directory after uninstalling. Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
