uninstall and re-install tips

I'm sure lots of people have recieved Christmas "goodies" for their computer. I know I have. Including a new hard drive.

I want to uninstall FSX from the C: drive the CORRECT and COMPLETE way.

and, START FRESH, on the new drive. (500 gb velociraptor, FSX ONLY)

I've seen NickN's guide,

http://www.simforums.com/forums/setting-up-fsx-and-how-to-tune-it_topic29041.html

but it seems aged, written in 2009, and, well, its 2013. Is this still the advice to use?

any links would be appreciated!

p.s. I have linked 3 folders to a stand by 640gb HDD using the link commands,

for example: mklink /J "SimObjects" "G:\FSX LINKS\SIMOBJECTS" .....this is just one of three..

the links should delete with the FSX uninstall...as well as, I can manually delete these folders in the "G:" drive

Happy New Year.

Backround info on my system:

AMD X6 1090t O'C to 4.1GHz

MSI 890FSA-GD70

Nvidia GTX 460

G.Skill 1600 RAM 9-9-9-24

CURRENT STORAGE:

90 GB KINGSTON WITH OS AND FSX (FULL!)

640 GB WD 7200 RPM

80 GB WD 7200 RPM (Wife's Drive)

NEW STORAGE:

500 GB VELOCIRAPTOR HD

I like the one put out by PMDG - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx. The only thing I would add to it is running a registry cleaner like CCleaner or Advanced System Care after the uninstall is complete.

FSX is an old program and was developed in 2006 so a guide to uninstall/reinstall it in 2009 would be the most up-to-date info available. The files left over in an uninstall in 2007 are the same as those in an uninstall in 2013.

Best regards,

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the link. I'm going to do a reinstall due to some performance issues I'm having. I've been putting it off because I have so many addons that it can be a daunting task, but its' got to be done.

I just went through a reinstall and enjoying every minute of it! I'm doing it slowly and installing my addons whenever I get time or feel like it. Some may never get reinstalled but I have installed a lot and so far no mods to my fsx.cfg (except highmemfix) and fsx starts up in less than 10 seconds and loads a flight in less than 30 seconds. Just have GEX, Orbx/FTX PNW, all my FS Dreamteam airports and GSX, ProATC-X, some Megascenery like SoCal and Las Vegas, and one MegaScenery Earth product (Maryland). Still have not reinstalled MyTrafficX and will hold off for as long as I can. That program (as well as other AI programs) will make my startup times increase considerably.

Have fun! Take your time.

Best regards,

Jim

I used the PMDG uninstall/reinstall guide and it worked like a charm. I just bought a 256GB SSD and thought it would be a royal pain in the butt to go through the process, but so far so good. I took notes, captured screenshots and made several backup files of various items such as EZDOK camera settings etc and that helped immensely prior to wiping off all the old files. Before I started loading the new drive down I fired up the stopwatch and it took a whopping 2.6 seconds for FSX to load up after clicking on the desktop icon. Man was I impressed! As Jim said big kahunas like MyTrafficX 5.4 will slow it down, but it's still waaaay faster than before.

Hi Chris,

That's interesting about the loading time. 2.6 seconds is fast! When I reinstalled, I was interested in what MS Visual C++ was installed. Then I wanted to see what version of dotnet was installed with FSX, SP1, and then Acceleration. As I reinstall programs, I'm also interested in what those addon programs installed with their respective installer. I installed my FSX in the default folder (Program Files (x86)) but most of my addon scenery programs are located on my mechanical HDD.

The most interesting thing about any reinstall is finding the registrations, serial numbers, order numbers for all my addons. I had a pleasant experience with HiFi trying to get my registration number to install AS2012. Mostly I had the information on my HDD as I save all registration e-mails in a flightsim folder for my e-mail program. Unfortunately, I lost the last six months of e-mails from addons recently bought but I was able to recover them easily through the developers.

When I reinstall MyTrafficX (and I will soon), I'm going to clock the load times before and after the install. I know the last time I did this it was a massive difference in load up times. But, if you want some additional realism, it's a must to reinstall.

Best regards,

Jim

Yes, Jim that MyTrafficX is a beast! I'm keeping everything nice and organized better this time as maybe in a year or so I'd like to transition to a high powered desktop and become a member of the overclocking "K" processor club. I'm definitely sold on SSD's and I love the fact I no longer have to defrag.
