January 7, 201313 yr John Sheardown former First Secretary at the Iranian embassy has passed . He and his wife hid some American escapees from Iranian Islamic revolutionaries. This act was the basis for the movie "Argo". This was one of many incidents of American and Canadian cooperation and teamwork. Both countries will forever remember him and his wife.
January 7, 201313 yr Thanks for letting us know. Stories like this are many times under reported. All the best to the family from those of us in America. January 7, 201313 yr I haven't seen 'Argo' but have heard it is a fictionalized interpretation of events, and John Sheardown and his wife were removed from the film for 'reasons of length and costs'. This is unfortunate because the true story of what happened is quite riveting if you ask me, so I have boycotted seeing the film. John Sheardown was one of two involved in the 'Canadian Caper' operation that saved 6 American Diplomats, the other man is Ken Taylor. As BillW says, this was a major event in Canadian/USA Relations that goes back over centuries now. I don't believe you could find two closer nations anywhere in the world, They have shared the largest peace time border since the War of 1812, that is almost 200 years of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation over the worlds largest boundaries. January 7, 201313 yr Author I read where Ben Affleck apologized, but it was a bit insensitive in my viewpoint. Canada can rest assured that we deeply appreciate these people. There is a man in my neighborhood that was trapped in the embassy. His experience was not a good one to say the least.

Yeah but that is Hollywood for yea, They'll have a brainstorming session to see how they can make a story "better". This was a story I grew up with so I was excited when I first heard about the film, and let down when I heard about the response from the screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (and many of those Canadians involved were invited to that screening). BillW, You are very correct when you say America appreciates what happened. I remember how grateful the USA was when this story broke as I am 1/2 Canadian, and 1/2 American. This story has a lot of meaning for me. Unfortunately the youth today are too young to remember this one and a film like Argo re-writes history for the younger generation as this is how they discover this story for the first time. Hopefully people will research the details further if they find an interest in what really happened All the best Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
