REX vs Default Scenery

Featured Replies

I am getting a bit tired of the old fsx scenery look. I decided to check out rex. Is it a big difference between the default scenery and REX? I really would like to make FSX look much better in any way possible, and would like to hear your opinion. and also, what is improved? Everything? or just a few things?

REX is a great product, but it doesn't change scenery per se. It changes the flight environment: water, sky and clouds. It will also provide weather. The best ways to change large areas of scenery are products like the UTX landclass packages and GEX for replacement terrain textures. The FTX scenery areas are superb but they address particular regions that are smaller such as the central Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest, but the detail is stunning.

Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.

REX like Syd said will change your flight environment, however the newest version (Essentials + Overdrive) also has come environment sounds that are really really good, and they have some textures that change airports a little bit (Runway, Taxiway, markings). The best stuff for textures in a general sense right now is GEX & UTX together, however with FTX Global coming out it should be interesting to see which product is better. For the longest time GEX & UTX were practically the only real choice for textures as the other companies could not match their quality especially combined. If you fly in New Zealand, Australia, or the Pacific Northwest of the USA then you can buy ORBX stuff right now which kicks the living crap out of all the scenery products combined. They also have other FTX regions that will be released soon, you have picked an interesting time to "upgrade" fsxpilot737, for now if you dont like spending money on FSX all the time, hold on to your cash and see what becomes of FTX, that's my suggestion.

Here are 2 sample videos of an Airport that ORBX did in the Pacific Northwest USA:

Two very superb replies above. I own REX Overdrive and couldn't imagine going back to default textures.

Sincerely,

I have the Orbx England and it is out of this world (well... kind of). I was thinking of getting REX overdrive now I'm convinced that its a good move. The runway texture at Stewart is beyond belief, Is this the Orbx scenery or the overdrive?

I have REX HD already and that is pretty good. I also noticed at Jackson hole ground stuff movement, was that AES or default? I need to know before I download overdrive tonight. Scenery cant be 100% accurate as some of the purists want, they seem to forget it is a simulator and is a facsimile of a place or object, but boy looking at the above we are getting close to it. I was sat on the taxiway at Frankfurt last night in a queue to take off and thought, how long will it be before we get controllers with national dialects? Its seeing and reading articles like this on great sites like this make our hobby what it is - sustainable and always progressing.

ORBX did both Jackson Hole and Stewart, most of the traffic that was there I believe was either player (person shooting the video) or ORBX traffic. I use REX Essentials + Overdrive and its absolutely worth the money, from what I have seen REX is best used for the textures and then OPUS for the weather injection.
