Having unusual Texture Issues

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm a fairly experienced fs9 man recently made the move to FSX. I havent loaded it too heavily but I'm having an unusual texture issue with addon aircraft that maybe somebody may be a able to identify on viewing and see something that I am not. The pics are attached, but forgive a bit of ramlbing on my part in an effort to provide as much info as I can. I have extensively searched the web and although others have experienced this issue its always related to a specific a/c and not quite the same as mine. The issue occurs in various payware a/c never in a default a/c. It also occurs in default airports and addon. My sim can load fine, and after switching views to outside and back in the vc the textures wont load again. It can also occur mid flight or from the get go. Also it occurs sometimes when I have loaded the a/c in the free flight opening screen, it will revolve with only half or no textures loaded. Sometimes when changing view I can momentarily get a blacksquare or two in the scenery or around the engines of an a/c. Sometimes the taxi way the a/c is on , the texture of this will be black too. I recently updated my graphics card as my old 8800gt was fs9 vintage, this issue occurred on both this card and my new purchase. I also am meticulous with changing drivers, safe mode, driver cleaner etc.

Info: I'm running an Intel i7 920 @2.66, a 660Gtx ti 2gb, 850 watt PSU, Antec case, lots of room for cooling etc. I run FSx on a single WD standard enough drive, on Windows XP Pro 32 bit. I have 6gb of 1666 RAM. (obviously limited by XP)

Addons:

Orbx PNW

UTX Europe

GEX Europe

REX Essentials (1024 clouds, and low res water etc)

TNCM, VHHX, FlyTampa

Bn Islander

Simcheck A300

Aerosoft Twin Otter

PMDG MD-11

iFly 737

F1 Mustang

Level D 767

QW 146.

The only addon a/c curiosly it doesnt occur on is the 767, Md-11, and the Otter.

Process explorer says FSX takes 1.8G of Virtual Space.

I have my FSX.cfg edited by Bojote's tool, with all the relevant entries added (HIGHMEMFIX), TextureMaxLoad to 2098. But I can post if needed.

I run my sliders at medium high, Autogen Dense, Scenery Comp Dense. Low water etc but it occurs no matter what setting I use.

Nvidia Inspector is set as per Kostas guide, Filtering is Anisiotropic in sim and AA turned off in sim.

My head is genuinely melted with this, and anybody who can give any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. As I said I have searched extensively for a solution before trying here. I do not use an external limiter but my frames a limited in game to 30fps. Sim runs ok whe this issue isnt prevalent, but texture load times when changing view even in default a/c isnt what it should be.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light.

George

Computer specs?

He put his specs into the OP, Jim.

Ah he did!

To the OP you are going to need to over clock your CPU closer to 4.0GHz. or turn down some sliders. What is happening is that your system is not able to keep up and the textures a then slow to load.

Not sure if related - I suffered from black squares on the ground and tried many fixes. People also told me to turn down sliders - in the end the fix was:

In your fsx.cfg

Add -

TextureMaxLoad=6

Under:

[Display]

Start at 6 or 9 and keep working your way up by 3s until it works.

It took me 18 before it worked on my system.

Note this is different from

TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 under [Graphics]

Maybe you have them not correctly placed in your config....?

I am no expert at what any of this does. But just trying to help with what solved my problem. :Peace:

If it does/does not work let me know so I know if this advice is valid.

Thanks Jim,

To be honest I was away from the sim and my pc for nearly a year and it takes a while to catch up on what's the latest and greatest hardware etc. My processor was high end when I left!! I know nothing of overclocking but since I've been back I have come to realise that it's the only way if you want true performance. A quick question however on what's the benchmark or minimum standard speed for a good FSX these days, must it be close enough to the 4 ghz mark? Before I delve into the wolrd of oc research over the next few days, is that processor to your knowledge overclockable (obv depending on cooling etc) to a good standard or is it more efficient to just upgrade the processor?

Rob, I'm going to try the CFG tweak first just because it's simple and I'll let you know. I've never played with this entry only the other parameters.

Many thanks.

Ps why would this only manifest itself on FSX planes? The 767 is a port over I'm assuming as is the Md-11?

Rob,

Interestingly I had that setting at 12 and changed it to 18. I opened my A300 in KSEA where I also have Orbx and it was butter smooth. My frames were between 25-30 when usually its 18-19. However the same issue occurred!

Jim,

As my sim is running fine and the issue is only texture related would it still mean my CPU is too slow? I have attached a pic of tonights KSEa flight with REX and when the Vc and exterior textures go black it appears that all my taxiway textures go black too. Not the runways but the taxiway?

Argh that is not good... on the texture issue anyways.

Keep going by threes would be my way to test. I have heard of a guy going much higher. into the thirties.

Again I am no pro like the guys around here but I have researched a bit for my problems and would be happy to look at your fsx.cfg

Oddly thought that is not the same look I was having problems with. Mine was just moments of black squares.

I have the same issue, no sure how to solve it.

I think your issues will be easier solved !

I have the same issue, no sure how to solve it.

Try the fsx.cfg suggest I made above FlyCathy. Hope it helps.

Yeah it did actually make a difference to my smoothness Rob, it was very helpful. However I was spinning around in my A300 for about 40 mins there just messing around with the autopilot etc and I got my first OOm error. I have to say I'm only new to FSX, I ignored it for as long as I could and its gut wrenching I have to say! I dont know how all of you stuck with it! All I want to do is load up my fs9 world again. It must be a killer when you've planned out flights and are descending only to have this happen. I'm now under the assumption that its futile to even attempt to try and run FSX on Xp 32 bit, unless anyone can assure me otherwise, I don't really think I'm actually arsed to start trawling through the forums researching OOM topics. Anyway, if there were such a thing as Simicide at the moment I'd commit it!

Hey George,

Man do I feel your pain! To me if I was not so heavily invested in FSX I would take my disk, burn it, grid it into pieces and flush it. The advice I would give you is get out before you spend too much money and time.

With my job I deploy overseas, travel for months, deploy on Navy ships and do not get alot of time to be in front of my sim computer. So when I have a weekend at home (like this one) is kinda sucks to spend the whole time trying to figure out how to get my sim and addons to play well together.

However reading the forums does give me something to do while traveling....

I guess it could just run the sim vanilla and look like a blocky mess.

Then you have to deal with developers who most of the time seem to have a bad attitude to questions - (let me speak to a paying client the way they do and I would never get work again).

I have been looking at XPlane lately and pray it will develop into the sim I could just fly.

But I do wonder - for some at least - if people would even fly this sim if it had had everything from the start - like great terrain, perfect planes, great frame rates and no need to ever buy another addon.

Good luck buddy and I wish you the best. Sorry to be the downer but thought we could share the pain. :drinks:
