Advice on a hair brain idea
Have bought 8 now so choices are those two. Although I know you're entitled to downgrade your OS legally from Microsoft, it's s pain in the hoop to do it I think.

Advice on a hair brain idea
And there's good enough gains still using modern processors, graphics cards, drives on XP 64 bit? It will allow me to use all of the 6gb of ram I've had for ages and never been able to take advantage of because I've still XP 32bit on my PC! I could never move on from it! Brilliant to hear that. Thanks A32xx

Advice on a hair brain idea
Hello, Building up my rig etc at the moment having been away, I'm going to upgrade to a latest ish processor and board, ram and keep my 660ti , I'll run both FSX in time but stick with fs9 as pretty much my main sim. So I bought a CD version of windows 8 this week, and my plan is to upgrade to 10 and run FSX. I didn't fsncy the idea of an OEM version of win7 so I just bit the bullet on it. I'll be purchasing two sandisk decently sized Ssd drives and it'll be a fairly decent setup. So, I've a chance to come upon a copy of XP pro 64 bit, and having discovered recently that you can run two operating systems on the same PC, would I better running fs9 on the XP pro 64 bit , and having Win10 for everything else ? What's the ideal OS for fs9? Would the later Operating system run the modern hardware better than the XP pro would run the sim if you get me? Regards George

Wow Robin, regressed??? Have you photos? So is the texturemaxload=x entry no longer needed as an addition? George

And yes, it seems I no longer know how to use these forums!!

Have I missed anything ?!
Hello, Have just turned on my PC for the first time in about five years. Had all intentions on jumping into FSX but from browsing again there's no way I'm going to now for a while having seen the new lease of life fs9 has. I used to know every tweak in the book for XP and for fs9 and now it's all had to be researched again. Can anyone have a quick look at what I've done and see if I've missed any major update or improvement that's glaring or that I havent caught up with? I'm upgrading everything in the new year but from now till Christmas I'm sticking with my old (which was once proudly state of the art !!) Rig of an i7 920 stock everything, 660ti and 6 gigs of 1600 ram on XP pro. So, here's what I've done 1. Cleaned out any unnecessary programs on my PC. 2. Created a gaming profile and turned off every service I don't need from memory on that profile. 3. Defragged intensively and placed my pagefile on a separate partition to my fs9 install. 4. Installed the 3gb switch 5. Installed clean nvidia drivers as per Nick N 6. Installed clean fs9, fs9.1 and no crack patch, and used ntcore to make fs9 large address aware. 7. Used Nick N guide to nvidia inspector and fs9 internal and cfg settings (I presume he's still the most definitive?) I'll be using alacrity PC to turn off any non essential services etc. Have I omitted anything vital? Going to install my usual base of fsgenesis world mesh, followed by UT world and GE pro all continents. Another question would be , I used to use Active Sky for weather programming but subbed out Real Env textures , is that still most peoples go to setup? Is the Real Env weather engine still inferior to ASE? Is this HDE that I've read about now superior to this? I'm fine for airports and aircraft, I'm trying to keep it simple and restrain myself from pulling everything I owned and installing it! I feel as excited about fs9 right now as the day 10 years ago when a buddy said to me 'you know you can download and buy aircraft for that flight thing don't you?'! I can't see myself getting involved in sweet fx or enb series. I'm too eager to fly. Thanks for looking George

Born Again Newbie requesting quick help
Hello (again) Firstly, let me just quickly explain that this isnt a 'how do I do flight sim' or 'what's the best ever thing for me without knowing anything about my system etc' type of question. There's a reason for it! I haven't turned on the PC in about 5 years I think, I fell out of FS just as it looked like Fs9 was dying, and I never really embraced FSX. I haven't posted here in that long and I simply can't believe the place. Fs9 isnt dead and FSX seems to have eventually made it! I'm in need of new pants regarding the new aircraft , scenery etc I've just seen. Anyway my question is regarding operating systems. Won't post in the OS forums because I'd have to post in each one, and a general Google search is being too vague. I have still have XP pro by the way! And once upon a time I could take an operating system apart , set it up a sim with such specific settings, but alas no more. It's all gone from my head. So point of this is I have an opportunity to purchase a new operating system today, and my question is this. What are people using for FSX? The good people who care to go through every detail like I'm going to over the next few months. I had heard the Win8 is a no go, and I'm figuring Windows 7 64bit is working the best? My choice is that or Windows 10. Is it a case of future proofing by getting Win10 and maybe suck up the tweaking and work arounds for a while or will Win7 provide more than enough compatibility for the next few years as I set about rebuilding a modern PC again. What would you do if you were a nrewbie again? Sorry for the long post, time today has prevented me from searching the forums and comparing opinions and weighing up pros and cons. Regards George.

FSX Plane & Graphics help
Not being smart, but maybe do a bit of googling of Msfs and add ons that work inside the simulator. I know this seems simplistic but it saves someone having to type out the reply you'll need here which could take a lot of column inches. It's a programme developed by third parties for payment to run in Msfs

Active Sky or REX?
It's as6.5 if you read the op Understood. Tomorrow it'll be purchased. Still use REX cloud textures?

Active Sky or REX?
Thanks Tim and all

Active Sky or REX?
Nope! AS6.5!! I'm reinstalling fs9 with a view to not spending a penny, because the money I've spent on addons for this is obscene over the years (hence I have both!!). So I'm sticking with what I have, as I spent money on a card upgrade for FSX this year. I've just set it up if anyone has pointers, I have used REX for water and sky etc, Im using Activesky for engine. But how do I stop activesky using textures? So far Ive not touched ASG and nothing has been checked. Also, anytime I make changes to REX in the options screen re texture sizes or HD clouds I have to click the install button to send them to sim right? Or is it like the FSX version where it sends them automatically? Thanks George

Active Sky or REX?
Hello, Just reinstalling fs9 after a long break. Remembering things as I go. Opening up my old hard drive I see I'm in possession of both ActiveSky and REX. It puzzled me for a while trying to remember which one I used to use then I remembered that I used ActiveSky for weather engine and REx for the textures. Is this still a good option or have we moved on? Thanks George Edit: On this topic of textures, I have GEPRO and Flight Env. GEPRO is installed and has options for water and sky, which I havent installed, are these inferior to REX?

FS9 is STILL the #1 flight simulator for 'heavy' operations!
Also what is being used for sky , lights , airport textures, trees etc now? I have Activesky Evolution , GePro, I own flight environment, but I remember using real environment pro for textures before I took a break? Thanks George Completely forgot about Glacier Bay, what an epic piece of art. Thanks!

FS9 is STILL the #1 flight simulator for 'heavy' operations!
Right, I'm taking this nice and slow. Defragging like mad after every install but Ive got my base again. FsGenesis, Ut Usa Can Europe, GEPro, Activesky. Has anyone got settings for the UTs? Long ago Michael Greenblatt set them up for me and I took them down once and of course lost them. He used to go through them one by one screaming at me what to leave unchecked! I remember some options can cause issues?

FTX Global- June 15th Release
It's a fairly mega idea. They're fast becoming the Rupurt Murdoch of FSX! A one stop shop for everything ! In truth it's almost like they're just designing their own FSX over the current one, and you just insert content or airports etc as you want them. Pretty ingenious. And then when a new area is being done in detail ie PNW England, it just seamlessly goes over the base pack all fitting together. One could just stick solely with Orbx and expand your sim world as they expand theirs.

FS9 is STILL the #1 flight simulator for 'heavy' operations!
Dillon, Thankfully I checked and I have every freeware aircraft and scenery. The only thing I deleted was my WoAi folders with all the packages and the bgls that I had saved just to reinsert into the sim. I was a tweaking exper at one time in fs9 , there wasn't a setting I didn't know how to use, and the amount of times I reinstalled that sim I had it down to a fine art. But it's amazing what you forget after a few years out !! Just one more thing. The one thi I'm addicted to in Fsx is Orbx. I have PNW and it's stunning. It actually runs quite well enough pauses aside on my HW , I get away with it to be honest but I know if I add too much more it's going to tumble. But do Orbx make sceneries for fs9 or just airports? I can't seem to nail that info. Because the only thing stopping me from going back is the terrible looking ground textures that I remember. Can anyone here post a few pics of their sim at its very best? Or link a few videos?

Thanks Dillon for taking the time to make that reply

FS9 is STILL the #1 flight simulator for 'heavy' operations!
This post has my head wrecked. I bit the bullet having been away from simming for two years. I said to myself 'right, time to move on and progress' , stupidly stupidly stupidly I deleted my cache of airports , aircraft, utilities etc that I had filed beautifully in folders in my hard drive for ease of install. Don't even get me started on my AI folder!! I started the learning curve of Fsx trying to catch up on what the tweaks were and what I needed hardware wise to upgrade. Using Kostas guide and performing some time consuming but simple OS fixes I've gotten Fsx so it looks really detailed and full. By fluke more than anything. I've got Orbx PNW and it is breathtaking at times. But the CTDs are hard to take. The OOM errors and the pauses and texture reloads. I'm still running a 32 bit OS and it's just not enough. I've not done too much to it that I'd lose anything significant if I went back. This OP has me thinking am I just trying to flog a dead horse. I miss my 747. I miss my LFRD. I miss all the freeware gems that I used to discover. I haven't read an fs9 forum topic in nearly 3 years so I don't know what effect newer hardware has had if any on fs9. I don't know if there are new tweaks or ways to setup that alleviate the issues we had years ago. I've got a an I7 920 and a 660 gtx. So am I better maxing fs9 rather than compromising on FSX? Have blurries / popping textures been eliminated ? What frames do fs9 ers aim for as a benchmark to fluidity these days? I see a sticky in this forum re texture issues that can , when gone through, cause significant gains in performance. Do they work? The thoughts of installing the amount of addons and utilities for fs9 does give me a headache, but if one thing FSX has taught me to accept a simpler sim. To focus on the basics to enjoyment which is the point to point flying fulfilling my fantasy as an airline pilot. Do you all have both installed or are you solely fs9? Have many not bothered at all to switch?

Level D 767 - would you still rate it in 2013?
Cast iron definate worth a try. I was a stalwart in fs9 of it. Loved it. I had been away from simming for a year for two and when. Got back decided to bite the bullet and go for fsx exclusively. I have tried the Md11 , various 737 (not the Ngx) , lots of aircraft to try and get settled on one. And I went back to the Lds and it's like a glove. The Winglet model is fantastic , the liveries are still great looking. Yes the vc textures are crap. But they're livable with. Trackir loves this aircraft. But for fidelity of systems etc it's still great. If you want what I want out of my sim experience, which is a bit of flight planning, weather, speeds etc , accurate startup procedure, lovely feel , and the ability to do some but not all out emergency or non normal procedures (missed app, engine failure etc etc) then this is for you. The manual is great, there's a ton of paper and tools for it. The vc mod makes it slightly better. It's a tried and tested winner. I haven't had the experience of looking at Axe, Ngx, Js41 so my eye hasn't become accustomed to these textural works of art so maybe that's why I can live with the vc better than most. I don't have the time lifewise to be immersed in some of the detail of the modern aircraft, and to be honest I don't ever want to. I want to play at being a pilot which means pretending I'm hauling cargo all over the world and setting little schedules for myself. And this ac fits perfectly for me.
