May 13, 201313 yr Hello, Just reinstalling fs9 after a long break. Remembering things as I go. Opening up my old hard drive I see I'm in possession of both ActiveSky and REX. It puzzled me for a while trying to remember which one I used to use then I remembered that I used ActiveSky for weather engine and REx for the textures. Is this still a good option or have we moved on? Thanks George Edit: On this topic of textures, I have GEPRO and Flight Env. GEPRO is installed and has options for water and sky, which I havent installed, are these inferior to REX?
May 13, 201313 yr Is this still a good option Yes it still is. And personally the best weather engine for FS9 is Active Sky Evolution. I assume that's what you have? JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
May 13, 201313 yr Author Yes it still is. And personally the best weather engine for FS9 is Active Sky Evolution. I assume that's what you have? Nope! AS6.5!! I'm reinstalling fs9 with a view to not spending a penny, because the money I've spent on addons for this is obscene over the years (hence I have both!!). So I'm sticking with what I have, as I spent money on a card upgrade for FSX this year. I've just set it up if anyone has pointers, I have used REX for water and sky etc, Im using Activesky for engine. But how do I stop activesky using textures? So far Ive not touched ASG and nothing has been checked. Also, anytime I make changes to REX in the options screen re texture sizes or HD clouds I have to click the install button to send them to sim right? Or is it like the FSX version where it sends them automatically? Thanks George
May 13, 201313 yr Commercial Member I believe AS has an option to not install textures. May 13, 201313 yr I believe AS has an option to not install textures. Yes, you must perform this George. ASE does not include textures, AS2012 does but is only for FSX/Prepar3d. Tom "I just wanna tell you both: good luck. We're all counting on you."

The difference is stunning and is a compliment to getting your install to FS9.75. I know your trying to save money but ASE is basically a must have. I tried bouncing back between the two at one point and found ASE starkly different than AS6.5 in how the sky and clouds looked. You need ASE... You need ASE... I've another question on a similar theme. I've been using P3D for a few months, but as my computer really struggles with it, I've decided to go back to FS9 while I save for a more powerful PC. The one thing I liked about P3D was the organic feel of turbulence sometimes it felt like you were being buffeting around in the sky by thermals and bursts of winds. For weather I was using Real WxLite as it ws the only weather program that my PC seemed to be able to handle comfortably. Now on FS9, even with AS6 it feels like running on rails with the occasional burst of turbulence as set in the AS6 options. Does ASE provide a more (for want of a better word) chaotic, realistic turbulence as per P3D (with Real WxLite)? Is it better in this respect than AS6?

ASE will not do much with what your already noticing in FS9 unfortunately. I have my turbulence turned up in ASE in the clouds which helps but I wish it was a better simulated effect. Understood. Tomorrow it'll be purchased. Still use REX cloud textures? Still use REX's clouds for sure. With ENB use the brightest sky texture you can find in REX. Go through all your various cloud options to find what works for you. Some REX clouds come off looking like redundant faces while others look perfect. Play around until you find the best option. May 15, 201313 yr Ok, thanks Dillon. I'll stick with what I have then and spend my money on an ATC update! Re. FS9.75 where to go after GEPro, AS6.5 (with replacement cloud graphics), Zinertek Water and Airports, Traffic 2005 (in my case, is there a more up to date one for FS9?), what do you recommend next?
May 15, 201313 yr For traffic, I see World of AI is pretty much updated, I don't own Traffic 2005 but 2005 does clearly indicate its limitation
May 15, 201313 yr On 19th May Pilots are releasing the FS9 version of their relatively recently released weather engine FS Global Real Weather. Frankly this program looks very promising and features local weather and local weather environments/phenomena, including "Innsbruck (LOWI, AUT), 2) at certain wind conditions when approaching Madeira (LPMA, PT), 3) Vagar (EKVG, DK) and 4) Gibraltar (LXGB, UK). Feel free to email requests!" I would suggest you check this out before you drop your hard-earned.

The best combination for traffic at this point is Flight1's Ultimate Traffic, GA Traffic, and WOAI. From there your own customizations is needed with updated paints and routes. The most up to date method is to learn how to build traffic yourself. I've done things like switching out my NWA paints with Delta paints to save time (changing call signs). Traffic is a work in progress which is why I have little time tweaking the basic sim (FSX). There's so many things in the sim to better spend time on.
