The FBO at APV was just a small two-room building... Mid-Field must have come along later. They had a 152, an Archer, and two Citabrias for flight training. Rental price for the 152 was just $25/hr wet, and the instructors charged $10/hr. They were pretty busy, as there were a lot of guys from George who already had their PPL who were pursuing instrument and commercial tickets. The GI bill would pay for 80% of it..

I didn't get rates much worse than you did believe it or not. When I started flying out of KAPV between '88 and '90 I was paying $30 for a 152 and $15 for an instructor when I needed one. We also had a lot of George AFVB there as well, mostly F-4 and OV-10 pilots that were instructors making a little extra money on the weekend. Most of the Air Force flight instructors were pretty laid back guys and treated me like a civilian not a military pilot in training, but I did have one though that was REALLY tough on me, almost to the point that I told myself that I would never fly with him again. I just found out recently that guy ended up being a test pilot, flew with the Thunderbirds, retired from the AIr Force and ended up becoming a captain for American. He also was a Red Bull race pilot later on. I saw him on TV a few years ago during a Red Bull race and though I recognized him, so I looked in my log book and sure enough was the same fellow. I googled him and was quite impressed by his flying resume.
