March 1, 201313 yr Moderator Can you name the lake and landing airport, Yep, Big Bear Lake and SoCal Logistics, formerly known as George AFB. Easy one for me as I graduated from Victor Valley HS, worked at Snow Summit in Big Bear during my senior year of HS and the Civil Air Patrol squadron I was in during HS was based at George AFB. I did the majority of my flight training at Apple Valley airport renting from Mid-Field Aviation and have flown all over the high desert. Nice work on the screen shots. March 1, 201313 yr So didn't you stall your Malibu into a landing at the nearby Big Bear airstrip? My old stomping grounds as well! I was stationed at George from 1974 to 1977, working on F-105G Wild Weasel aircraft assigned to the 561st TFW. Lived off-base in "Beautiful Downtown Adelanto". I started on my PPL at Apple Valley too... though I didn't finish until several years later at an airport here in upstate NY. When I lived their and was on base for CAP activities there were no F-105 around but the Wild Weasels then were F-4's. Used to love watching them go over my high school during the day. I can't imagine Adelanto had much going on in the '70's since it was still pretty barren when I lived their in the late '90's. I lived in Spring Valley lake off Bear Valley Rd in those days, not sure when that development was built, maybe after you had already left. When you were flying at KAPV was Mid-Field there yet? The Wild Weasels were in the process of transitioning from the F-105G to the F4G during the last year I was there. Yeah, Adelanto was pretty sparse back then. I remember when they built a casino there right on highway 395. No slots or blackjack, just poker... most excitement the place had seen in 20 years! The FBO at APV was just a small two-room building... Mid-Field must have come along later. They had a 152, an Archer, and two Citabrias for flight training. Rental price for the 152 was just $25/hr wet, and the instructors charged $10/hr. They were pretty busy, as there were a lot of guys from George who already had their PPL who were pursuing instrument and commercial tickets. The GI bill would pay for 80% of it... March 3, 201313 yr Looks impressive! What scenery is this? I live in Palmdale now and that would be nice to have. Thanks Chuck Biggins
March 3, 201313 yr Beautiful screen shots! I spent a short time at George as well. My dad was there with F-4Gs between 1979-82. I still remember when the base first got cable TV. It was only 1 or 2 movie channels. Keith Guillory
March 4, 201313 yr I was flying near Banning a few days ago - this scenery done a nice job compared to what I saw! Nice screenshots. - Luke Pabari
