Cloud Help

Featured Replies

Hello all at AVSIM,

After receiving FSX some time ago on my new compiter, I have come to realise that my clouds just do not work.

I can, however, seem to use Cirrus clouds when using adavanced weather, but any other clouds cause a huge drop in FPS - cirrus clouds don't touch the FPS.

I was woindering whether having REX 2.0 would be the solution?

I have a Dell Inspiron 580, with an Intel i5760 at 2.80 ghz (not overclocked), 750gb hardrive, 8gb RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 5450.

I am sure my graphics drive is the issue, but I ma wondering whether using REX instead of the FSX default weather would improve my FPS.

Thanks to all,

Clouds causing FPS drop is often a video card issue. You could try Shader Mod 3, it's supposed to help with clouds when using ATI video cards: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/283701-bojotes-shader-30-mod-for-fsx/

Also, have a look at the Hardware/Software guide: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/398022-avsim-software-and-hardware-guide-for-fsx/ to tune your system. It's possible that using the DX10 mode as discussed in the guide would help your performance.

REX has beautiful cloud textures but they are generally of higher resolution than the default cloud textures, so they would likely increase the FPS hit. You can select lower res cloud textures in REX to match up with your system's performance, but I suggest you get your system performing well with default cloud textures first.

Absolutely!

ATI Radeon HD 5450.

As I run an AMD card as well, I can confirm the positive impact of the Shader 3.0 mod suggested by Barry. You mileage may vary, of course, but for me it is absolutely essential. Without it, I get low framerates and stutters with heavy cloud cover. With it, of course there is still a bit of impact from dense clouds, but it's very manageable.

However, looking at what you've described for computer specs, you should also be careful of not trying to run with your settings too high.

Okay thanks everyone. I can't get the Shader to work; it says there's been an installer error?

You could try re-installing.  I've become pretty picky over how stuff installs; I only install the shader 3.0 mod by hand.  There is excellent instructions on how to do so in the readme file that accompanies the mod, if that's something you were interested in having control over.
