March 4, 201313 yr Hi. I'm looking for a few opinions here on my harddrive setup. I see where the AVSIM Hardware and Software Guide for FSX highly recommends that FSX not be put on the C Drive. I've seen others (i.e. PC Pilot mag) recommend that FSX should be put on the C Drive as it would normally be. Also, is an SSD recommended for whatever drive FSX is on? Any comments from others on here would be appreciated regarding what has worked best for you. March 4, 201313 yr The argument for performance is 50/50. A more practical reason has to do with reinstalling or repairing either Windows or FSX where one doesn't effect the other. Either way, always install FSX in its own folder and not the default Microsoft method. SSD for FSX is always nice. Everyone that has done it, has seen an improvement in smoothness due to file reading, loading, etc. The problem is a budget to afford the size required. Given that SSD's should not be used beyond 80% capacity, you should really be using an SSD with 300+ GB which gets expensive. It all depends on whether you use lots of scenery, textures and aircraft. My SSD is a 480 is 1/2 full after one year. Ron W
March 4, 201313 yr I went with a 240 gig ssd for the op system & a few other bits n bobs , & a 600 gig velociraptor for fsx & add on aircraft & sceneries , it works very well on my system. <p> Paul Sleight
March 5, 201313 yr Author Thanks for the help. I ended up buying a 240G SSD last night for the OS and will use my already-installed 300G Velociraptor for FSX. I've also got a couple more large drives installed for misc. FSX stuff. March 5, 201313 yr Just keep in mind that contrary to popular belief an SSD will do very little if anything at all to increase frame rates.
March 5, 201313 yr Author Thanks, BogeyFree. I had read that in a couple of places and that's why I chose to put FSX on the Velociraptor. Hope I'm right in my thinking. March 5, 201313 yr Yes that will work just fine. Also keep in mind that any more than 4 gb RAM is not used by FSX. For other things maybe but not FSX.
March 6, 201313 yr Author Thanks. I had forgotten about the RAM issue.
