March 13, 201313 yr I think you will find in general Windows provides two areas for storing files (as compared to registry) related to application configuration, APPDATA and ALLUSERSAPPDATA. Those variables are resolved by Windows while running to folders belonging to the logged-in user (APPDATA) or all users (ALLUSERSAPPDATA). I think some versions of FS had install options of "install for this user" or "install for all users" but I don't think that option exists for FSX. At any rate, all the FS versions I have installed have had scenery.cfg and related folders (database and cache) in the all users appdata space. In Win XP that was the system drive \Documents and Settings\All Users\Appdata\. In Vista/7/8 that has been changed to system drive \Users\All Users\Application Data\, however, that folder is aliased to system drive \ProgramData\ which is where you need to go. scott s. .
March 14, 201313 yr Hi Scott: I used the more universally applicable variable "[user profile / account name]" above, in an attempt to simplify the multiple possible path folder names one might encounter for "All Users" (or a IT Administrator-enforced "single" user type account / profile name) ...when describing a location for the FSX 'active' Scenery.Cfg. FYI: Some end users may re-install Windows via the "Refresh Install" method, and find they have a newly-created "All Users.Windows" value for that folder name ...in the path to their 'active' copy of Scenery.Cfg after they have either re-installed FSX, and/or had its original installed path data "retained and reconfigured" ...by the refresh install of Windows. But, indeed, "All Users" may be at least a portion of the folder name in the path to the 'active' copy of FSX Scenery.Cfg which the FSX end user might need to navigate to find that file on their 'own' Windows installation. Thanks for interjecting that important point of clarification. GaryGB
March 14, 201313 yr Hi Gary, Now that's something else I didn't know. However, I have been noting very long load times since installing all the VFR GenX Photoscenery, and terrain (perhaps not surprisingly) is mainly responsible. Thank you for your very detailed and informative post - must have taken an age to put together for us. We should all be copying, cutting and pasting this for future reference. Regards, Mike Hi Mike: Thanks for the kind words; I hope that info may help FS users better manage their FSX configurations in the future. BTW: It's good to see you back in the FS forums, and I have also greatly appreciated your efforts to assist others with their FS configurations through your own posts here and elsewhere on FS web forums over the years. Welcome back... and Happy Flying ! B) GaryGB
