Really bad fps on approach

Featured Replies

I wonder if anyone can help me with a major problem I am having in FSX? Basically I get pretty good fps (28-35) in the VC of the NGX using ASE, REX, GEX a small amount of UT2 AI. When I am on approach at about 2000-3000 feet I get a really bad drop in fps from about 25 right down to 8-12. As I said this only happen on the final part of approach and last about until I have parked at the gate where it will usually shoot back up to 25-35.

I am using a pretty powerful computer, i7 2600K, GTX570, 16GB RAM. Why do I get such an fps hit on approach?

Sounds like the AI drag. Lots of traffic showing?

Not a lot of AI showing really. I have UT2 set at 70% and traffic slider in FSX turned to zero. If it is AI is there anything that can be done?

Its the traffic. If you have moving jetways enabled in the UT2 configuration tool, turn that off. Other than that, reducing traffic is the obvious solution.

The OP indicated he had reduced AI so I doubt the AI is the issue.  A drop in fps is common whenever landing (or taking off).  It all depends on whether it is a default airport or an addon, whether real weather was turned on/off, the aircraft you was using, a default or commercial, the amount of AI loaded, and, of course, your fsx and display driver settings.  If I am flying the PMDG 737NGX in heavy weather using AS2012 and flying into TropicalSims KDCA, my fps drop dramatically and I am in the single digits.  Once it crashed but mostly I am able to land.  Although the fps are low and in the single digits, it still is fairly fluid. The fps seem to increase after landing. There is no solution other than to turn your settings down.  Same thing happens if I take off from KJFK in the same scenario with FSDT's KJFK.  Single digits and sometimes it goes up into the teens but the fps suffer until I am in the air and out of the area.  I don't know how many resources the FMC takes up during landings but it is doing a lot of computing to keep you on the glideslope especially in heavy adverse weather.  As the OP can see, I have a very similar system.  You have 16GB's of memory but FSX can only use 4 GB's on a 64 bit OS.  The rest is used to run your computer.  4GB's is still a lot of memory but not if you have fsx and display driver settings set high and using up a lot of resources for scenarios I described above.  Bottom line:  8-12 fps sounds great to me!

Best regards,

Jim

I had the same problem and solved it deleting the fx_skidmark.fx file in FSX\Effects folder (tweak shown in the AVSIM Software & Hardware Guide).

So do I just delete this file or do I have to tweak something as well?

You can just rename the file (i.e. fx_skidmark.bak). It's an effect file causing an important loss in fps when approaching airports but I haven't seen any visual quality loss deactivating it.
