March 21, 201313 yr This thread reminded me of a real experience I had when I was working on getting my PPL. I was out flying with my instructor, and he was running me through a verity of procedures, like “ok your engine just died” he would pull the throttle back, “ok find a place to set it down”. After doing this and some other procedures, he said to head back to the airport. So cruising along headed back, all of a sudden the engine started to die, and without even thinking about it, my hand automatically went to the fuel selector valve and turned it, and the engine came back to life. I have to admit that made my heart skip a beat, anyway I looked over at my instructor and he proceeds to ask me “is that the proper procedure for and engine out situation?”. lol  I can remember at the time that it really surprised me that he would actually shut off the fuel to the engine. Anyway it was a real shot of adrenalin to my system. :excl: J. R.
March 21, 201313 yr On my PPL check ride the check pilot pulled the throttle back and told me to look for a place to land. So I push the nose of the C-172 down to maintain best glide speed and start to circle looking for a likely field. While I'm busy with that he asks me to tell him what the outside temperature is. Ok, now we are on finale approach with full flaps to this nice looking field just about to cross the fence. Way lower then I wanted to be when he finally tells me to bring the power up and start milking up the flaps on climb out. I felt certain he was going to make me land in that field. Well, he did sign off my ticket at least. Boy, that check ride was something I will never forget! And I guess that was the idea. Steve
March 23, 201313 yr Glad you like that Peter. If you follow this, and have an "emergency" I would love to here how it went. I have about a 50% success rate so far. Probably do beter if I didn't cruise around so damn low lol. Moe
