why is overclocking hurting my FSX performance?

Featured Replies

Ok so I was getting 15 FPS at fly tampa dubai in the NGX at 4.5 Ghz I removed the over clock and now I get a smooth 20 to 25 FPS whats wrong with my CPU? I will say I've never got the overclock stable no matter how much voltage I throw at the chip it wont stay stable over 4.3 Ghz while other guys have theirs stable a 5 Ghz with just a slight voltage bump. One thing I do notice even at stock clockspeeds in OCCT the CPU underclocks to 3ghz for a few seconds even at 100% load do I have a bad chip or mobo?

Have you disabled all the "energy savings" junk?

Yea HPC is enabled and the green stuff is off.

Cranking up voltage is definitely NOT the best way to go about overclocking.  I'm not that familiar with AMD CPUs, but I'd suggest you look at RAM timings and/or find some tools that will benchmark your RAM/CPU/Cache performance.  I use SiSoftware Sandra Pro 2013, but it's not a free tool.  Anyway, you'll need some "metric" (other than FSX) to know if your overclocking adventures are helping or hurting.

OR just leave the clock speed on how it should be :D remember that every time you overclock your hardware the life span of it will be shortened even if you have a good cooler :)

I seem to experience a similar effect with FSX whereby I get higher fps at 3.8 ghz than at an unstable 4ghz.

What about "unstable" do you not understand? Each CPU is different - because one person can get 4.5 stable does NOT mean another can. Also, each system is different. Take that 4.5ghz cpu and put it in another system and it may not get to 4.2! If your clock is UNSTABLE - all bnets are off - there is NO WAY to benchmark performance on an unstable clock.

Get is stable at whetever maximum the system will take and then do your testing.

Remember - 100% stability FIRST or it's a crap shoot.
