I recently got a new machine that should handle FSX.  I've installed FSX Standard (bought it a few years ago).  Now i notice that several addons, Active Sky, ADE, FS Build seem to call for the SDK feature in the Deluxe version.  Should I buy the Deluxe or Gold version and what are the overall advantages to these expanded versions of FSX?

Most need SP 1 and 2 installed now. Gold as I recall has them added, Deluxe and Standard you need to add them manually, both SP's are in the Avsim library

As said above gold comes with everything ready to go plus acceleration. It's what I recommend and use.
