April 24, 201313 yr Hi all - does anyone know where I can download an FSX Cessna 152 simulator that contains a DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) kit on the instrument panel? Been using JustFlight's which has been great for my needs - until now when I need a DME for practicing instrument approaches for my IMC Rating lessons in the real aircraft. Flight1's FS9 version C152 has one, but it's not compatible with FSX. They do carry a different FSX version, but annoyingly they've gone for the "spartan panel look" that takes the DME away! In the meantime am using FSX's bundled Cessna 172 (which has a full radio navaid stack). Basically the same plane with similar V-speeds etc but I'd much rather practice in the type I'm actually flying for my lessons. Can anyone help?
April 24, 201313 yr You may substitute GPS for DME... It's true. You can use an IFR certified, panel mounted GPS in lieu of DME. There are some other pretty obvious caveats. I'll stay away from those. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 25, 201313 yr Author Thanks guys. Useful point about the GPS and I'd use it. But JustFlight's C152 panel only has COM1/NAV1, transponder, VOR/GSI, ADF/RBI, but no GPS. See picture: http://assets.justflight.com/images/FSi_C152r_1.jpg How can I download a GPS or DME for my JustFlight C152? Two possibilities are emerging (1) download an FSX Bendix-King radio/nav stack from, say, FSD Avionics BUT a) there needs to be data that sits behind the panel; and b) can I put the DME/GPS just anywhere on the panel or does it have to replace something? (2) downloading the Flight1 FS9 C152 but will it have compatability issues with FSX? How can I make it work? Sorry the link didn't quite work. Try this one: http://assets.justflight.com/images/FSi_C152r_1.jpg
April 25, 201313 yr You may substitute GPS for DME... Is this a new legislation? I specifically remember this not being the case,at least in the USA. For instance, if an approach is labeled VOR/DME-A or GPS-A you can fly the approach. But if its just VOR/DME-A you cannot legally fly it with only GPS equipment. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
April 25, 201313 yr You may use suitable equipment. It's in the AIM 1-1-19 and in the instrument flying handbook. It's true. You can use an IFR certified, panel mounted GPS in lieu of DME. There are some other pretty obvious caveats. I'll stay away from those. Exactly. There are a few exceptions, but a good answer nonetheless.

I'll refer you to some one that has experience, though. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 25, 201313 yr Is this a new legislation? I specifically remember this not being the case,at least in the USA. With certain provisos, this has been in place in the US since 1998 - well before panel mounted, IFR certified GPS's were common in the GA fleet - so it's definitely not new. Scott
April 25, 201313 yr Hmmm what about the approaches like my question above? If you don't have the equipment can you still sub a GPS for VOR/DME ? | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
April 25, 201313 yr Hmmm what about the approaches like my question above? If you don't have the equipment can you still sub a GPS for VOR/DME ? Yes. It does not have to be an overlay approach. Quick edit - but any DME reference points MUST be in the GPS' database. Scott

Only NDB approaches must have a GPS overlay to use GPS in lieu. Good luck finding active NDB approaches! I wasn't aware the legislation was that old (1998), but indeed it is after some quick research. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 26, 201313 yr Author Adding one to the VC is pretty simple. I'll refer you to some one that has experience, though. I'm interested. There's plenty of space on the C152 panel for me to selectively add a DME kit. For example sticking the DME set from the FSD Avionics stack where the chart/document box on the right side, just like they've done with the real aircraft that I'm doing my lessons in. How does one do this on FSX? Any takers?
