Landing is incredibly difficult

Featured Replies

When I first bought and flew this plane, 2 weeks ago, I was like whoooahhh, forget 10 years of flight simming;   I cannot land this plane!

Now 2 weeks later, hand on heart, almost every landing is a greaser  ... the factor was as Martin said above, do not retard the power levers, until your main (back) wheels have fully touched down.   The props are huge on the Q400, and when they're not generating torque; they are immediately generating huge drag.     Once I realized this, and also that you must be established on approach (in terms of trim) by 500' in this aircraft, I nailed the landings.

PS... I do agree that Flaps 15 gives a far more smoother landing than 35.

I'm not sure in regard to flap 35 and smooth landings.

I landed at LOWI yesterday, with flaps 35, and it was one of my smoothest landings ever.

Need to try a few more I suppose.

Also learn how to use approach mode, it works like a charm. And practice,practice,practice..;-)

Superb landing Peter, I have subscribed by the way..;-)

Thank you, I have a new video and a new challenge for all of you who want to master this magnificent aircraft. This time it's the most challenging approach for a commercial turboprop airliner in Europe, the approach to Isafjordur rw08.

That was insane. For a minute I thought you were using LBS instead of KGS and thought you'd be gliding it all the way down.

But that approach looks great. Especially with that hazy/foggy/drizzly weather. Nicely done.

Wow, that was intense, what route is that Pete please?

I agree with Mike, that was intense, great video Peter! I too would be interested in that route.

Thanks once again, now about the route as I am pretty familiar with it. There is only one route to and from Isafjordur, it's flown by two airlines Icelandair ( the main airline in Iceland ) and in the last years by the regional Air Iceland. The route is from Reykjavik: BIRK - SID: RATSA ( above 3000 ft ) - MYRAR ( at or above 5000 ) - SKALM - then - RE- between 6100 and 4500 ft where you start to descend to -OG- ( 2900 ft- min 800 ft ) and finally -IS- between 1000 and 800 ft where you turn to heading 262 to BIIS. The types of aircraft used are Fokker 50 and DHC 8 - 100 series only and if you are one of the few who had the chance to experience it as a passenger in reality you'll will never forget it ( see the video below ). But I can assure you one thing, properly landing there in a PC flight simulator for an experienced pilot is way harder then in reality ( I witnessed it yesterday, but promised not to talk publicly as the result was pretty embarrassing :) .

I do apologize for the bump, but this is something I felt like I needed to correct. The ECU varies prop pitch during power changes and with low settings, it coarsens it automatically with the governor. It feathers itself to maintain an incredibly low drag profile.
