.dll difficulty ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm in the process of re-installing FSX on my new computer (Win 7 64bit, 8Gb ram, i7 processor, NVIDIA GTX 650 video). All was going reasonably well until loading the PMDG MD-11 and the iFly 737 NG. The PMDG MD-11 crashes FSX (CTD) and the iFly comes up with an error stating that it cannot load iFly737NG.dll. I've been to the PMDG support site and have applied their fix to the dll.xml file to convert all line terminations with Ctrl+LF in the dll.xml file. But this hasn't worked PMDGF still goes CTD and the iFly error still appears.

I have partitioned my hard disk and created a H: drive where all “User” folders are created and stored. I've also copied my appdata\roaming folders to C: in case it helped … it didn't. I've checked all the access rights on the folders and increased them … still no joy.

The only other item of information is that when previously trying to install HiFi's ASE ,that completely broke FSX and I had to re-install FSX, and I haven't got around to attempting the re-install of this (HiFi) yet.

I'm wondering if I may have a problem with simmconect or that my firewall (Bullguard) or Windows firewall might be configured incorrectly … or this might be a red herring.

Has anybody got any ideas why PMDG and iFly are not loading and causing a CTD ?

Regards

Peter

You have a nice system so they should run nicely once installed properly.  Can you run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html and copy and paste the latest crash here so I can see the possible cause?  The iFly error has been discussed frequently on the iFly FSX payware forum so you should log into that forum and you should find a solution to this problem there.  Make sure you have at least SP1 and SP2 installed.

They have a payware forum for this product to avoid providing support to software pirates and I support that concept. Here's a link -  http://ifly.flight1.net/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=4764&title=help-ifly-737.  I am confident you will find the solution to this problem at the iFly forums.

You may be on the right track regarding a possible problem with SimConnect.  If it is not installed properly, HiFi's ASE will not work as this product immediately searches for product registrations and verifies authenticity and it also needs SimConnect to go to the server and update the weather occasionally.  I had a similar problem with AS2012 and ended up uninstalling/reinstalling AS2012 several times before I discovered SimConnect was not properly installed.  FS Developers.com has an excellent tutorial on the proper installation of SimConnect based on the version of FSX installed - http://www.fsdeveloper.com/wiki/index.php?title=SDK_Installation_%28FSX%29.  They also have an excellent Forum on SimConnect issues too.

I'm not sure why you have another firewall (Bullguard) installed.  The Windows firewall provides adequate protection.  Some suggest disabling your firewall, disable UserAccessControls, and disable any anti-virus program prior to installing FSX, FSX SP's, Acceleration, or any addon software.  I do not recommend these drastic measures, especially disabling your firewall.  Disabling UAC and any anti-virus program might be a good option though.  Whenever you install a product, you need to make sure you right click the installation program and run it as the Administrator.

Another possible solution would be to ensure you always say yes when you install a product and start up FSX and the program asks you if you trust a gauge, a product, etc.  It is my understanding that if you say NO the product(s) will still run in most cases but Windows security could have an issue with running an untrusted file somewhere while you are running FSX.

I believe the PMDG MD11 uses Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 to make sure their product is installed properly and runs correctly as they developed.  Microsoft Visuals are very important to the proper installation and running of FSX products and addons.  You also need to have Microsoft.net versions 1.1 through 4.5 installed.  This program is used by FSX addon makers to make sure the product runs as intended to include managing memory for the product.  MSV's and dotnets are not backward compatible.  You can run the utility at the following site to verify whether all versions are properly installed - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Jim

Most of the symptoms you described can be reproduced by installing FSX over an existing installation. If you did uninstall, did you do so via the recommended method (manually delete all folders after a uninstall and reboot, etc).

Also, these sorts of problems are also known to occur after a proper Uninstall if one doesn't start FSX after the initial installation, then close FSX, reboot, and continue with the install. This should also be done in between SP1 and SP1 installs if you don't install FSX Acceleration (I don't recommend doing so... see below).

Since I'm on the subject, since you're using high-end third party aircraft and/or Active Sky I recommend only installing Standard or Deluxe (deluxe preferred), which is to say not installing Acceleration.

Hope this has been of help.

Thanks for all the information. It will take me a while to work through all your suggestions. I'll get back to you soon with how I get on, wife, work, golf and fishing permitting. I've got a feeling it will be due to the simmconnect not being properly installed, and I'll try and fix that first, before I go nuclear with another re-install of FSX.

Thanks again

Peter

I went for the uninstall/re-install (this time doing an uninstall for Acceleration first) but before I load up my PMDG MD-11, ASE 2012  ie. the software that is simconnect dependent. Does having CITRIX receiver installed on my PC (I work from home a lot) create any issues with simconnect ?

It shouldn't.  They are totally independent but the PMDG MD11 and AS2012 are memory hogs if settings are set too high.

Best regards,

Jim

I've loaded my high end add-ons now and I'm almost back to normal. I believe my original issues were cause by not uninstalling correctly ie. forgetting to uninstall Acceleration before FSX and not manually removing FSX folders.

My next issue will be to load a client install of simconnect on my spare PC to run ASE. I'll do plenty of research before I start though.

Thanks for your help
