The first time that problems arose with too big a senery.cfg file was when I had somewhat over 2000 lines. Other simmers told me that they had same problems but already earlier than after 2000 lines, mayby 1500 or less.
From that day I decided to make different scenery.cfg files for each continent, and that worked fine. I have now 8 files. The only ennoying problem was that I sometimes missed when switching the files, and worse, sometimes I lost the whole file when overwriting it bi another one.
To avoid future problems I want to find a better system, so that I don't have to switch every time when I make intercontinental flights. Or even, because my European scenery.cfg is now almost 1000 lines, and maybe I will soon have more. I want to have a system that is as said above "more comfortable" than what I have now. And indeed the best idea that I met with is what we talked about here, and I will repeat what I have in mind now:
The program should be capable to manage scenery.cfg files almost automatically, and as follows:
- in a first column there wil be a list of all scenery folders well named and that can be shoosen for use in FS9
- to a second column eighter by mouse dragging or pointing and clicking one can drag/move/copy those scenery files that are needed for the next flight.
- a third column should show the newly generated scenery.cfg file after clicking an extra button, and in that file  sorting the lines is still possible before ...
- with an extra button the command is given to place that new scenery.cfg file in the FS9 main folder as required, overwriting the existent one.
I would enjoy if  I could have a program like that. I myself cannot make such a program, but maybe you or other simmers can...

After reading this thread it appears to me it would be very labor intensive every time you want to fly.  True, not during your flight but before.  Why not:

 

1. Use a program like FS Scenery Config Editor

2. Make categories of each country (not continents... way to large)

3. Divide up the scenery into those countries.

 

Now before you fly activate which countries your will be flying through based upon your flightplan. 

 

There you go... your geography is covered from point-to-point, you won't have too many sceneries or "lines" loaded to worry about.

Maybe you missed part of the discussiob above...
The problem is tha when I start an intercontinental flight I will have too many lines in the scenery.cfg file, or midway I have to switch from one to another scenery.cdf file.
You should know that, once the number of lines in the scenery.cfg gets too high, with eighter activated or non activated sceneries, and that can be different from one to another computer, according to the possibilities of same, there happen memory errors so that FS9 runs unstable.
Therefore I want an easy system to generate a scenery.cfg file with the least possible lines in it. And with a system like described above I would be able to every time make a highly affective scenery.cfg file with few lines.
The labor intensity what you mention is not through, because, of course, the original bgl's of a clean FS9 would almost always be in column 1 and also in column 2, as well as world mesh files, LC files, roads ans water files etc, I would only have to switch some specific addon sceneries before generating the scenery.cfg file and placing it in FS9 main folder, eacht time before a new flight...
Not so labor intensive I think!

Yes, you need to install Java for it to work.
