June 15, 201312 yr Hi all, I've been thinking of upgrading my current build to a 'Haswell' CPU, mainboard and 8 GB memory... My current build, is: Core i7 920 2,66 Ghz @ 3,2 Ghz ASUS Rampage II Extreme ROG X58 mainboard 3x2 GB 1600 Mhz Kingston Hyper-X RAM XFX GTX 295 graphics-card Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as system disk (ONLY FOR WINDOWS). I would upgrade, so my new build would be: Core i5 4670 3,2 Ghz (<-- could select the K-version of the CPU for a little more) ASUS Z87-K mainboard Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz (4x2 GB) RAM XFX GTX 295 graphics-card Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as system disk (ONLY FOR WINDOWS). I haven't so far, been able to find any direct comparison between a Core i7 920 and a Core i5 4670 CPU. What performance difference (if any?) would you think I would experience in FSX with such an upgrade? The GTX 295 is running FSX quite well... I have only 1 monitor, running at 1680x1050. Would a graphics upgrade do anything instead of the above CPU upgrade? In short... what would be worth upgrading? If anything? Thanks for all the help in here! June 15, 201312 yr 15-20% @3.2ghz and if you take a K and OC to 4ghz 40% If that number is in the ballpark, not sure its worth it, is a new MOBO needed?
June 15, 201312 yr You will need a 1150 socket MB (Z87) for Haswell. This is a nice discussion of Haswell from an Intel rep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylNT1Co-Q6k John Hubbard MSFS2020 - Win10
June 15, 201312 yr Nehalem to Haswell is around 25% improvement in FSX with IPC alone. The 4670(K as well) is 3.4Ghz but will turbo to 3.6 in FSX at stock settings. So you are looking at around 40% over your current rig.
June 15, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the replies! Sounds like an upgrade could be worth it... Best regards,--Anders Bermann-- ____________________Scandinavian VAPilot-ID: SAS2471
