Can an outdated graphics card driver effect performance?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, recently I am coming across a problem where my FS 2004 is taking longer to load, and once it gets past the splash screen, the screen is black for about 10-15 seconds and then finally loads, also loading time is a little slower in selecting aircraft, flightplan, etc. Also, when I am in the flight and I go to slew, there is a slight freeze when I go in and out of slew. Anyone think this is an outdated graphics card driver issue? Or is the issue somewhere else?? I just remembered that I havent checked for an updated graphics card driver in a bit, so I am going to do that tonight.

Any thoughts / comments about this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Btw, I have windows 7 and I am running FS2004. My system specs are:

3rd Generation Intel I7-3770K 3.5 GHZ (Turbo 3.9 GHZ) Liquid Cooled by Corsair H60
16 GB DDR3 RAM
2 X 1 GB Radeon HD 7750
700 Watt PSU
Windows 7 64 BIT
WD 1 TB HD

Dan,

Not sure how the Radeon cards compare to Nvidia but based on the specs for the HD7750, I can tell you my experience in a recent Nvidia card upgrade.

I was using a Nvidia GTX460 running at about 900mhz. With this card, was getting about 15-20 fps at KSEA. After upgrading to a GTX660, at KSEA in the same aircraft, same runway, same FSX settings, was getting up to 26 fps.

Your CPU looks like it should run FS2004 comfortably with a few tweaks. For my experience, upgrading your video card should help overall performance a good bit.

Hope this helps.

Working on MSFS 2024 versions.

Nope IMHO.

FS 2004 was designed to run with video cards OF THAT ERA. It is more CPU limited rather than GPU.

However a more modern GPU allows one to use higher Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering not to mention higher resolutions for your monitor. Newer drivers are unlikely to help.

Loading takes longer as you add aircraft, sceneries etc. If the symptoms you write about are not related to additions may I suggest you delete your current FS.cfg file. FS 2004 will build a new one which you can modify to suit. Often this little action will solve many issues.

Best of luck.
