Photoscenery texture size 1024, 2048, 4096?

Recommended Posts

I know the specs to most of these photo real scenery are like 1cm, 38cm, etc, but in terms of pixel size, what are they?

For MegaSceneryEarth 2, Newport Scenery, France VFR, etc

I'm not sure what uses 4096 textures in all my add ons.

There's a misconception that the texturemaxload setting is need to get "better" textures. That's true if the texture comes with multiple versions; 1024, 2048, 4096. But if it only has one texture set, that is the one that will displayed regardless what number you have in tml. So the carenado planes that come with 2048; I'm pretty sure that's all they come with. So you can have 1024 tml and still see the 2048 textures. With photoscenery, tml has no effect. Really the only textures affected by tml are REX clouds, water, etc and any other addon that lets you choose which textures you want. Maybe not what you asked but too many people think they need 4096 textures to have nice scenery. And 4096 are not 4 times bigger than 1024, they're 16!! And people wonder why they have ooms.

I understand that but what addon or scenery actually use 4096x4096 textures besides REX clouds? I think FSDT Airports does?

Photo based scenery is not controlled by the FSX.cfg setting for a texture max load. It's controlled by the slider in the FSX settings area. A lot of photo work is done at 1 meter, some less than that. Adjusting the slider allows for the rare chance you might see the much lower resolution.

Nothing uses 4096 HD textures unless you install them, through the REX, FEX, AS2012 and other addon programs.  Some aircraft were made with HD textures but you have to install those textures before they can be used.  Photoscenery does not use HD textures but the other programs, like REX, FEX, AS2012 will render HD clouds if you set it up in the respective programs configurations.  I have my Texture_Max_Load set to 2048 only for the AS2012 HD clouds.  Even though I have a powerful system, I will not install the 4096 textures as I don't think FSX can render them fast enough.  If you are flying exclusively in photoscenery like me, then it is suggested you keep your Texture_Max_Load setting no higher than 2048.

Best regards,

Jim
