Onn and Sensitive Copilots

Featured Replies

I know the title doesn't initially make sense... but bear with me. Let me start by saying that I am really enjoying MCE and it is making my simulated flights much more realistic... great product !!! With that said, I have a couple issues that I hope can be addressed.

First, when replying to checklist items, many times I respond with the word "ON". Unfortunately, somehow the voice recognition interprets my response as "ONN" (I see it in red letters at the top left corner). Since "ON" sounds like "ONN", I can see why the recognition confuses the two; but since "ONN" is not a word, I'm not really sure why it's even in the MCE vocabulary to cause the confusion. Of course, the copilot chastizes me accordingly for answering "ONN" and tells me the appropriate response is "ON". But since Trav puts me in my place often enough already, I was wondering if there is a way to fix this. I have tried custom training the word "on"; but it hasn't made a difference. I've also noticed this only happens when responding to checklist items; I haven't noticed it when just issuing voice commands.

Second, I have MCE going through external speakers. I know this is not ideal -- but I like to keep ATC in my headset and have the copilot in speakers for the proper effect. Often times, the result is that the copilot hears himself talking and responds. The unfortunate part is that he often thinks he is hearing profanity (Sh**, Tw**, and Rat from what I've noticed). Trav then grows quite incensed and takes it out on me with his snide little comments. This eventually gets on my nerves to the point of me actually wanting to use those words back at him for real. I've tried to use the "no bad language" fix mentioned elsewhere; but it doesn't seem to work. Since the majority of the disruptions only happen when he thinks he hears profanity, is there a way to just get him to ignore the perceived curse words and make no response? I think it would make things go a lot smoother in the cockpit.

Thanks for any help you can provide. MD.

Hi,

Good to hear you're enjoying the Multi Crew Experience.

I think there is a bug in the documentation. To disable recognition of mild insults, you need to add

NoBadWords=1

to the [OPTIONS] section in mce.ini found under

C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Multi Crew Experience\ folder

Since not all sounds are routed to the headset, you may want to fiddle with speakers and position them in a way that they don't feed directly into the mike.

Profile speech training is usually done against a completely silent background, so it's normal it doesn't perform as expected when the latter changes significantly.

You can always create a new speech profile, train it from scratch all while playing the typical background noise you experience during a simulator session (pre-recorded). But it may not be worth the trouble unless you go beyond the Demo.

Regarding the "Onn". It appears it's a mistake in the grammar.

The speech engine has a tough time distinguishing between the OFF from the ON.

We added the "Onn" just for people who tend to emphasize the N at the end. However it should display as ON.

If you contact support, you'll get a replacemt grammar file today. Just specify your operating system.

And don't forget to download and install the additional voice packs. They will work with the Demo too

Unzip and run "InstallVoice" for each voice pack.

to clarify, is the mce.ini inclusion "NoBadLanguage" and/or "NoBadWords" ??

for now, cheers

The mistake was in some earlier versions than 2.5.5.4, in which case there is the need to manually add "NoBadWords=1" to the [OPTIONS] section.

Starting from 2.5.5.4 it's back to the documented "NoBadLanguage=1" to disable. It doesn't hurt to have both though.

thanks gerald ... i might add both !!

for now, cheers

I just wanted to follow up to thank the developers for their help. Clarification on the bad words/language fix has eliminated 90% of the copilot's extraneous commentary and the grammar file I received has completely solved the "onn" problem. Great support for a great product !!!

One last question. When updating MCE... do I need to uninstall the older version first or can I just install the update over the top? Also, I've customized/edited several of the checklists and voice scripts that came with MCE... will updating the software replace these files (and the new grammar file I received)?

Thanks Again. MD.

Thanks Again. MD.

You're welcome.

Voxscripts are saved under \My Documents\Multi Crew Experience\Myvoicescripts\

Therefore, they won't be lost after un-installing.

When the installer copies new scripts it never overwrites existing scripts of the same name.

For checklist, avoid editing an existing one in MCE installation folder unless you copy and paste it, rename it and edit it. Any named checklist known to the installer will be un-installed. Maybe should save the custom ones to other locations

Update process always goes like this...

Un-install via Windows Control Panel

Do not manually remove the remnants of \Multi Crew Experience\installation folder.

Your license.key file always remains there as well as the extra voice packs which you won't have to keep re-installing.

Go to the downloads page any time it suits you.

Download (save) to your desktop.

http://www.multicrewxp.com/Downloads.html

Unzip and run "setup" to install the update.

That should be all you need to do.

If having issues, there is no point in re-installing FSX or even MCE, just reset to factory settings.

Start->All Programs->Multi Crew Experience->Tools->Restore factory settings

That will ensure the mce.ini is in synch with the latest changes. You will also be prompted to go through the application wizard which will set everything as it should be speech recognition wise. No need to perform speech training after an upgrade.

The speech profile is managed by Windows, and is only lost when you delete your user account from the machine or format your hard drive.

I believe the latest version doesn't have the issue with the "onn". Only replace the file if you see it happen.

Regarding files installed to FSX, P3D, FS9

MCE doesn't edit any aircraft.cfg or panel.cfg files inside the simulator folder.

Only fsInsider.dll is added to FSX, P3D folder and \FS9\Modules\ folder

A folder called \MCE dlls\ is created inside FSX folder. It contains one dll for every complex aircraft supported and a generic one to handle others via the FSX SDK.

If you need to troubleshoot FSX, remove fsInsider.dll and the \MCE dlls\ folder and you can remove MCE from the equation.

The heavy part of the application (speech engine and audio dlls) runs outside the simulator process. That way, it's one add-on less fighting over FSX virtual address space resources (4 GB limit of a 32 bit process). It's bad enough that aircraft, scenery, weather and traffic don't have the luxury to move things outside it. Although in some cases they can too. Just not for textures.
