August 17, 201312 yr Greetings, In my attempts to figure out why 2 of 3 FSX flights crash with an error in the d3d11.dll module I fired up NVIDIA Inspector. When it opened, it was not my MS Flight Simulator X profile that was loaded/active, but instead was "_GLOBAL_DRIVER_PROFILE (Base Profile)". Okay, maybe I made an error somewhere. I changed it back to my profile, Apply Changes, and we are a go. Nope. Restarting Inspector show that my profile is no longer active, but instead the GLOBAL profile is. What gives? August 17, 201312 yr It always opens in the default profile, as long as you have navigated to the Microsoft Flight Simulator X profile and applied the changes then the settings will become active when FSX is started. \Robert Hamlich/
August 17, 201312 yr Make sure you have the fsx.exe applied in the profile you made, it may not be setup correctly I have also noticed sometime I just pick a new heading like flight redo your settings and apply the fsx exe should be good to go, until you install another version of NI then you can use the flightsimulator x version again - sometimes they get messed up - it has happened to me. August 17, 201312 yr Author Hi Richard, Thanks for the rapid response! I was unaware of the "add application" option, and have added fsx.exe to the MS Flight Simulator X profile. Two things come to mind: I assume the settings will be activated when I fire up FSX? Does this mean that I have been running with default settings all this time? Thanks again, Richard. JKH EDIT: Default settings still persist, despite having fsx.exe running. I am running a new graphics card, a GTX 580. My prior card was a GTX 560 and those setting persisted when I "Applied changes". Do I need to remove all vestiges of the GTX 560 profiles? August 17, 201312 yr JKH do know every time you update your video driver you have to re-do your settings what I do is export a favorite setting so I do not have to do it over again, yes everytime you run fsx you should be fine long as you get it working in the first place I assume the settings will be activated when I fire up FSX ---- Yes Does this mean that I have been running with default settings all this time? ------ only you would know by how good or bad the graphics are Does it look ok ? -------- posting screenshots of your NI panel would help Do I need to remove all vestiges of the GTX 560 profiles? -------- I would reinstall NI then its a fresh new version - apply your settings and should be good to go Bottom of this post these setting should be tried http://forum.avsim.net/topic/324786-nvidia-configuration-guide-inspector-2xxxx-drivers-version-20-explanations-of-all-settings/page-18 I used these settings in the screenshots from link with gtx580 with no problems Rich Sennett
August 17, 201312 yr Author Heya Richard, Your recommended settings look good, except that I am a DX10 flyer. I am increasingly perplexed why the settings don't persist! I exported my setting, re-imported them, applied them, but when Inspector is fired back up, it reverts back to the Base Profile. There are about a dozen "Undefined" entries at the bottom of the list, but I also see similar for the 3DMark profile, etc. As for how it looks? Auto-gen object and aircraft look okay - terrain is the suck! Monstrous jaggies, like there was not even an attempt at anisotropic filtering. Thanks for your help, Richard. August 17, 201312 yr See NickN's post regarding the proper uninstall/reinstall of Nvidia Drivers and configuration of NV Inspector. \Robert Hamlich/
August 17, 201312 yr DX10 will be different let me see if I can find my settings to post hang in there - dx10 is specific to its self Paul helped me out with it. Here you go I forgot my fsx settings but you should be able to figure that out Rich Sennett
August 17, 201312 yr Author Thanks, Richard. Those DX10 settings are pretty close to mine, the only difference being the AntiAliasing - Setting: mine is 8xS [Combined: 1x2 SS + 4x MS]. I think I must have some kind of driver corruption, which may account for why my settings don't take/persist. I think I'll following Robert's suggestion and use Mister Needham's driver re-installation instructions. I will let you know how it turns out! August 17, 201312 yr Author Hi Richard, Robert, Been a fun trip down the rabbit hole here. After performing a clean install of the NVIDIA drivers and defining a new MS Flight Simulator X profile from scratch, settings still do not persist. However, I believe this is normal behavior for the GTX 580 versus my previous GTX 560, and that it dynamically manages profiles. There are a number of reasons I believe this: Flying is fabulous, the beautiful Orbx scenery looks great, and everything is smoooooth. A new-to-me tool is the NVIDIA Sensor Monitor. When FSX is not active, the GPU clock is only 51 MHz. As soon as I start FSX it immediately jumps to the max, 772 MHz. I don't have to be flying to see this, indicating the FSX profile is loaded when FSX is loaded. When I close FSX, the clock resets back to low frequency. I cannot change NVIDIA settings while FSX is loaded (to tell the truth, I can't remember if this was possible on the 560. I may be confused with SweetFX settings). Flying is fabulous! So, my "problem" was not a problem at all, but is instead a power-saving feature. Whereas my GTX 560 settings were static (Inspector always pulled up what I had previously set), the 580 uses the profile that optimal for the active program, and for the desktop, that is Basic Profile. Thanks to you both for the assist! August 17, 201312 yr Sometimes you have to return to Nvidia Inspector as the changes do not apply the first time. It is preferential to make the changes in NI first then restart FSX after deleting the .cfg and make your edits later. You do not need to worry whether NI is recognizing FSX or not as the FSX.exe is coded into the Microsoft Simulator X profile. You can see it if you press the 8th button to the right of the "Apply Changes" it should have FSX.exe in the popup. You can cancel it by pressing a blank area in NI. \Robert Hamlich/
August 18, 201312 yr You welcome hope you are all set, you did learn a lot we always do in this beast they call fsx lol - take care Rich Sennett
