MilViz Beaver Broken in V5.3?
Thanks for the response, Dan. I will give it another try this evening and report back. With regards to prop pitch, I had originally set it to Axis Prop Pitch 1, but when that did not work set it to Axis Prop Pitch. That too did not work. I ran out of patience last night - will try again with a refreshed mood. Although I am going to start my taxes today, so it may all be for nothing... 🙂

MilViz Beaver Broken in V5.3?
Well, this went from bad to worse. I re-installed the base Beaver package and found that the entire cockpit was now black. Oh, I thought to myself, I forgot to update the Expansion Pack. So, I updated that from the MilViz forums and executed. Nothing. I have nothing. The Expansion Pack installation wiped the Beaver off my system. When I try to re-install the base pack I get only three messages that are delivered in 1 second. Nothing. First the Vertx DA-62 and now the Beaver, two of my favorite low-and-slow aircraft. I think my system needs a mind-wipe, beyond the SFC and DSIM commands. Thanks for the help, guys, but I think there are deeper issues at play here... 😞

MilViz Beaver Broken in V5.3?
With "spring in the air" I thought I would fire up the MilViz Beaver and fly out of YSE down to W33 (Friday Harbor). First time this new year. There were a lot of things that did not work!!! I was unable to move the Prop lever, even though FSUIPC saw the lever and knew when it moved. The Starter switch does not work. Panel lights do not work. Did something break while I was away flying in the Southern Hemisphere? I tried a search the forums, but AVSIM said I could not execute, I think due to system load? I know MilViz is out of the Prepar3D commercial business, but last time I used the Beaver it was fine in P3D5.2. Thanks!

Climbing to VFR on top out of SBA
Aha! Thanks, Ryan. I only have space (and time) for one flight simulator and that is P3D. Beautiful aircraft - hopefully we'll see a port-over sometime in the future.

Climbing to VFR on top out of SBA
Beautiful aircraft! Just one question, though: where did you get it? Given all the excitement and focus around bizjets lately, I am surprised I missed this one!

Is this case mostly hype?
Howellerman replied to bjratchf's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcI always read the reviews, and if there is a spike of bad reviews it is generally a good idea to avoid it. The fact that the first four reviews, even the positive one, mentioned *leaks*, makes it a no-go for me!

HondaJet
It is really too bad the Honda legal-beagles are so militant! The June issue of Flying magazine has a "we fly" evaluation of the HondaJet and it sounds like a terrific aircraft in so many ways: fast, quiet, spacious, and most of all, "intelligent". Really too bad...

My decision to fly as few airplanes as practical
Heya Spirit, I too like the Bonanza aircraft - simple, straightforward, and yet, they do sound good! The Shrike is fun (I have emotional attachment to it), and the repaints from Mister Sennett and the interior redo (gets rid of the "run hard and put away wet" look) is highly recommended. Still, a turbo version would be welcome...

My decision to fly as few airplanes as practical
Fundamentally, I agree with you Greg. Buuuut, I find myself drawn to "scenarios" that make my flying interesting, and need a variety of aircraft to support the scenario. Fast trip to Paso Robles (I am based at Reid Hillview, KRHV, San Jose) with the wife - the Lancair is perfect. Trip further south with the kids on board? The Carenado Baron with the HawkDSL Turbo Mods. Trip with family and dogs to visit same in Portland? Phenom or Lear. There are aircraft that are just plain fun to fly, where the scenario is to terrorize the countryside. The A2A Mustangs are a perfect fit for this. The RealAir Dukes are also not to be missed - I enjoy "flying" them as much as any other aircraft. I don't have hundreds of aircraft in the hanger - maybe 50. But, I find myself driven by the "mission" in order to keeps things interesting. So, I am with you, but I am weak... However, I can be discriminatory - some aircraft I have purchased and retired within a day - they had no soul, or a weird instrument layout (I seem to be a Beechcraft Boy), or just made me claustrophobic (the Corvalis and SR-22 come to mind). I am awaiting the MilVis Beaver (obvious mission there!), their KingAir 350i (take a bunch of friends to Vegas!), and Lear 60 (take a bunch of friends anywhere!), but am pretty happy with my limited hanger right now. Ultimately, the scenario defines the aircraft. But, I am weak...

Intel CPU's for 2016
Howellerman replied to MarkW's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcYou do know your audience, yes? Definitely agree that the two additional cores for the 6950 are not worth the uplift! That would be like buying a Koenigsegg Agera-RS instead of a Enzo Ferrari. Oh... wait... never mind...

Intel CPU's for 2016
Howellerman replied to MarkW's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcI don't know that for sure, Steve. I remember Rob Ainscough on his hyper-threaded 6 core/12 thread system running all those logical processors pretty hard! That being said, I think the next system I put together will use the upcoming Broadwell 6900K with 8 cores, 16 threads. At roughly a thousand bucks, it is a LOT less expensive than the 10 core/20-thread version! And if I can get the same 4.2GHz that I am seeing today on the outdated 3770K I think it *should* be best of both worlds. A project for when I retire next Spring!

Intel CPU's for 2016
Howellerman replied to MarkW's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcHeya Gboz, When I am flying GA aircraft around PNW and similar on my OC 3770K with hyper-threading enabled, P3D v3.2, I see all eight threads running pretty much full tilt, with "system" busy in the 80+ percent busy range. It is the terrain processing that loads up the cores, and the terrain engine is definitely multi-threaded. You can see this yourself by turning on Task Manager, Performance, and setting refresh rate to Slow. Let everything settle. Start up P3D and what those cores/threads become saturated during terrain loading. I have P3D installed on an SSD, so that may allow better utilization/CPU saturation, but it is clear that terrain loading is multi-threaded. JKH JKH

Carenado working on new installers.
Interesting. Thanks for the tip-off, Bill. Since I buy all my aircraft directly from Carenado there is zero notification that an "update" is in place. In fact, the "update" flag on my download screen seems deliberately misleading: yes, the version is now 1.x, but when I attempt to install it (not using EMT), it is the same old installer. The TBM came up as V2.0. That appears to be the go-ahead for the triple installers. Thanks again, Bill. Will have to look at the correlation between the X-Plane versions and my hanger to see what else may have changed to 2.0.

Hold Short at runways... and then what? :)
Heya Turner, I think the most direct answer to your question is that once you hold short, you announce you are ready to go, possibly for the second time. This "wakes" up the guys (and sometimes gals) in the tower. I too fly exclusively GA, but have tried IFR flights a couple of times. My suggestion is don't - very non-intuitive and frustrating. Requesting flight following seems to work - just make sure you respond that you can see the bogey even if you can't!

Another CJ Shot
Thought I recognized the Master's touch... Looks similar to the one you did for the Phenom 100, which just happens to be my standard paint for that jet. Looking forward to the library upload. Thanks, Rich.

P3D3.2 looks really good, but hesitations are really bad!
Heya Pete, A simple thing that helped for my micro-stutters (which admittedly don't bother me as much as blurries) was turning my monitor frame rate down to 29, and locking frames as 24. Fortunately, turning your monitor rates down is a simple test. I also use Process Lasso to get all non-P3D V3.2.2 threads off of logical processors 0 and 1. For whatever reason it is smooth as silk unless I get into highly congested areas. Orbx SCA over metropolitan LA is a slide show, no matter what. Good luck!

Looking for a plane (GTN, fast, full VC shadows)
Per the original suggestion of the Carenado PC-12, it does have cockpit shadows on the knobs and whatnot and they look like carp... carp sticks... sticks of carp. Just flew it in P3D V3.0 and still trying to warm up to this aircraft. Goes back in the hanger, comes back out after someone says something nice, goes back, etc, etc, etc. Frank, I would KILL for an updated Carenado Baron that was accurate, had better lighting, and accepted Henry's turbo mods. Insta-buy! And I am sure the MilViz updates are right around the corner as well - have both the B55 and C310, and since the P-38 was just updated it is only a matter of time.

My First Forays Into IFR
Greetings, This is not meant to be instructive, by any measure. Instead, I hope to convey some of the ... ahem... pleasure I encountered from a guy that normally flies GA VFR attempting to fly GA IFR. A succinct summary would be: Please expedite your climb.. Please expedite your descent... Hand off to Norcal/Oakland/Auckland/Tralfamador Hand off to Tralfamador/Auckland/Oakland/Norcal Please expedite... And my favorite, after I ignored a go-around (I was tired), "Did you hear my last transmission..." I could have sworn the guy got testy with me... What a nag!!! This is all with the bog-standard ATC in P3Dv3. I may have made an unfortunate choice in aircraft/scenario, in that My first attempt was from Christchurch to Auckland in a Phenom 300. I thought the AI traffic program (free from Orbx) would add to the immersion - it added, alright, but may have been too much of a good thing. I was listening to ATC talk with other aircraft, but I was 14 minutes out at FL310 and nobody was telling me to descend. Is this normal? I manually descended by asking for lower flight levels, and actually successfully landed in Auckland without killing anybody despite a 3,000 fpm descent. Whew! My second attempt was with the Flysimware Lear 35 (a great fun airplane, by the way - a total hot-rod) from San Jose to Portland. Jeezus. I was conservative, I was cautious, but still failed. After the fourth hand-off and climb instruction (is this normal?) I pulled the chute somewhere over the Bay. Maybe I should have tried IFR with the Turbine Duke or a slower aircraft? Certainly, the Learjet can get away from you quickly, and the added AI traffic from the Orbx OZ package can complicate things. The T-Duke is slower, but still can ... expedite ... climbs and descents. IFR flying feels like somebody is beating me with a ball peen hammer compared to VFR. The enjoyment of a leisurely turn to starboard at 1,500 fpm is gone. Instead, I have a Task Master who wants me to expedite. I do love the lady's voices, though. Is this normal?

ORBX SOCAL
I am not certain about this, but I believe what you are seeing is the combination of "place high density urban photo real texture" on the "terrain at coordinates x/y". The urban texture is somewhat generic, so you will have that shopping mall/office building wrapped around a hill, houses and roads that are abruptly cut in half/terminated, or someone with their backyard in a ravine. I have seen this is in all Orbx regions, and it is a good example of "don't look too closely". The Mega Scenery guys (which is photo real specific to all x/y coordinates) like to use this argument against Orbx, but Mega Scenery lacks auto gen that give a 3D appearance, IMHO.

A Big +1 for the Carenado Phenom
Hi Will, It is not a full-on cold and dark, ala a full-function check list as Glynn would like. Instead, I just go through the things that need to be done in order to get an aircraft started and flyable. Batteries, pumps, LFE (which is selected on the MFD), cabin pressure, etc. It is not exhaustive by any stretch, but I don't have any orange lights/messages and everything seems to work at it should. The hardest thing in my use has been getting the AP to respond predictably. If something does not work, fine, but when it seems that one command sequence operates differently from another it drives me buggy. I don't fly the Phenom as much as I used to (went back to pure GA, trying to learn ATC and IFR better), so I am pretty rusty. Although I did do my first full-on IFR flight in the Phenom 300 (room the carry the kids AND the dogs) and it was quite an adventure. The simplicity of a Bendix King auto-pilot with a functional ARM mode cannot be beat...

Headsets For FSX etc
Howellerman replied to Dougal's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcI don't have a suggestion, Dougal, but will say that your dog loves you: well-seasoned headsets are tasty! The more seasoned, the better!

Tis the Season for Giving!
It is that time of year when when we can give back to the people who enrich our lives through their contribution to the Community. In my flight simulation community, that definitely includes: Tim Arnot, creator of the freeway Plan-G3 software. I use it all the time to create VFR flight plans and monitor what is going on during flights. Maarten Boelens, creator of SimlauncherX, my indispensable tool for hanger maintenance and launching all of my P3D flights. Been using SimLauncher since version 9.3 for FSX. Great tool, although Maarten has gone on a bender lately creating a tool that is everything to everyone. Still love ya, Maarten! And of course, AVSIM. The big pot of glue (duct tape?) holding all of us together. Thanks! A few quid/euros/bucks have been sent your way in appreciation. Here's to another year of flying!

ORBX SCA - Really Impressive - the skies are alive!
I just took a flight in the Legacy from KMRY to KSBA and am hugely impressed! I usually fly PNW with the Orbx GA AI package installed, and run the GA slider at 100% - I like my airports to be "active". To clear the air a bit and cut down on the load I also run AI Traffic Manager, and around my two areas usual areas (KPDX and KORS) it will eliminate about 100 aircraft. Otherwise, the amount of frames thrown away to managing GA traffic is just ridiculous. To my surprise (and delight), the SCA skies were alive with aircraft - it is apparent they carried over some of the coding from the PNW GA AI package into SCA - and when I fired up Traffic Manager it removed about 30 aircraft. Still, I averaged 23.8 fps versus my target of 24.0, and it was smooth sailing at 2500 feet. It would be nice if they added the same amount of traffic activity to NCA! I am running a slightly dated system (3770K, 4.2GHz, GTX 780) but it yielded a smooth, visually compelling flight. Got to love RealAir aircraft for their low fps penalty - the updated Legacy and Duke will only make things better for P3D V3! Good job, Orbx!

ORBX SOCAL
Really too bad to hear, GPF. I just flew from Monterey (KMRY) to Santa Barbara (KSBA) and had zero problems - average frame rate of 23.8 versus my target of 24.0. My rig is a bit dated relative to yours, 3770K with GTX780, P3D 3.0. In fact, I am hugely impressed - the amount of GA traffic in the skies is phenomenal, on the order of PNW with the Orbx GA AI package installed. Perhaps you were not aware of all of the traffic in the skies with you? The Orbx boys did a great job with KSBA - very detailed, Object Flow people running around, the only thing missing is Commercial Aircraft, ala KMRY.
