November 7, 200421 yr First thing I'd do is rule out that heat is the problem. Best way to do this is to remove the left side cover from your computer case and stick a small house fan in there flowing cool, fresh air into the components. Then go fly. If you still get lock-ups you can then start looking at other possibilites.Hope this helps,Greg
November 8, 200421 yr As well as fans a buildup of dust in the PSU can couse the components in there to heat up and not produce enough power that can cause lockups as well.... this is kinda a sub-problem related to Cooling.
November 8, 200421 yr "As well as fans a buildup of dust in the PSU can couse the components in there to heat up..."Something like this, Ben?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96791.jpgKnarly! :-) Greg
November 8, 200421 yr Uninstall all your video card drivers and control panels etc associated with ATI. Second, get DRIVER CLEANER, and make sure it finds any stray driver system files in your windowssystem32 directory and deltest them. Reboot your computer and ensure that it boots to the default Windows VGA drivers and then reinstall the latest ATI drivers.HTH,Mike T.
November 8, 200421 yr I have checked the last 2 times I had CTD after having a couple of no problem flights. 1st was the F1ATRB.gau (which I am trying find something from Flight 1) and this last time was a weather.dll. This is just ridiculous I have 2 years with no problem and all of a sudden I cant finish a flight. Thanks for your replies I will check on the heat and drivers. Andrew
November 8, 200421 yr > Dont have the WinXP sp2. Have been having all kinds of problems after installing the patch. My XP did not have SP2 either. This week I installed SP2, not only did my problems disappear, but as a bonus my frame rates jumped 10-11 fps! It takes time to install, I'd start it before going to bed, then when instructed to reboot, do so. Leave the system on, and go to bed so your time is not wasted staring at the screen. In fact, I leave my system on 24 hours a day. The monitor shut down saves a lot of energy, and it defrags or does other system maintenance, like virus checks etc.. Bob
November 8, 200421 yr Thanks for the info Bob, I figure adding XP2 now would be the time to do it since I have only just reinstalled FS. If it goes screwy on me I can do a reinstall again if need be. Andrew
November 8, 200421 yr LOL exactly all fans can work fine but dust can be a problem... BTW what is that part it looks very cooked :)
November 8, 200421 yr >Thanks for the info Bob, I figure adding XP2 now would be the>time to do it since I have only just reinstalled FS. If it>goes screwy on me I can do a reinstall again if need be. Your very welcome... Good, if we think about it, FS9 and the Patch was created on XP. So it is logical to think that it would run much better on XP. If you only have FS9 intalled, I'd do a completely NEW install of XP... the way its recommended. You can use the XP upgrade, from W98 or ME, and get rid of the old FAT system. Some things in the SP2 upgrade, were probably designed to fix things in programs, as a result of all the error reports they've received from software in XP. (Any time you get an error, XP asks if you want to send a report to MS... Say yes, and it automatically generates the info about what was running in memory, what caused the error, etc and sends it to MS.) Operating systems are so complex there had to be conflicts with previous systems. Evidently there were even conflicts in XP, which have been fixed in SP2. Bob
November 8, 200421 yr Author To those who experience CTD's as of lately:Do you fly with the real actual date? I do and I have noticed that indeed more CTD's seem to show up. There is/was a know problem as the seasonal CTD from mid Autumn all through Winter. I am not aware of what was the cause of this but MS claimed to have most of them fixed in the patch.Apparently they were not very succesful in trying...
