November 9, 200421 yr Hi,I upgraded my computer from these specs:P4 1.7GHZMSI GEFORCE 5200FX 128MB256MB RDRAMTO THAT ONE:P4 3GHZ512 DDRRAMMSI NEO-2 MOTHERBOARDSAME VIDEO CARDI was expecting to see at least 10-20fps increase so that i can have about 30fps at dense airports ,weather, etc.............And OH MY GOOOOOD I didnt get a single FPS increase, same FPS as my old PC, sometimes lower ........HOW CAN THAT BE I DONT GET ITI KNOW MY VGA IS THE WORST BUT HOW COME THIS INCREASE IN CPU SPEED AND RAMS DOESNT HAVE ANY ANY ANY EFFECT ON FPS
November 9, 200421 yr Don't panic,Start by making sure you have your new MB's latest BIOS settings. Then go through the BIOS setup and check all the little things that make a difference, like AGP apature, what speed the ram is running at and such. If a book came with the MB, READ IT. It should tell you how to adjust all the little items in the BIOS for better performance, or find someone on the forum who has that MB and talk with them on how they are set up. November 9, 200421 yr Following Clay's advice should help a bit but- the real bottleneck now is your graphics card.Dave
November 9, 200421 yr In the BIOS setting there is an option that makes the MB adjust itself to the best performance it can give Aperture size is set at 64mb, everything else such as drivers are set. I know my VGA is bad but i still wonder how come this CPU SPEED AND RAMS makes no difference, other than that other games still have the same performance it just like i m sitting infront of my old PCi have windows ME installed on drive c: and XP on drive d:since i havent change my HD i only formatted drive D: and installedWINDOWS XP again while windows ME still as it is from the old PCCOULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM !!!!!!!!!!NB AA AND AF TURNED OFF AND EVERYTHING IS ADJUSTED TO PERFORMANCE
November 9, 200421 yr bios and chip set upgrades are very very important. It dosn't matter if you have new stuff but old drivers, it sucks. Just do it. And what the pro said, you're a bit short on the card part, but it's mostly cpu processing power, so you should notice a big difference if you get it right. Good luck!!!! We're here for you....billg
November 9, 200421 yr As already noted, FS2004 is more video card dependent than FS2002 was.Certain settings may inflate the problem--such as loading up on the AI, running at a higher res (greater than 1024x768) or anything that causes the vid card to work at keeping up with the textures. That's one of the reasons even a low end system like my own may have reasonable fps if such factors are sacrificed. However, early on in FS2004's life I compared notes with others who had my video card (a GEF 4200/TI) and faster cpu's. In all cases, their performance was where I guessed it to be--if their cpu was twice as fast, their average performance was about twice as fast as mine.So much depends on keeping your MB driver sets current, and/or also making sure there's no other background tasks running that may be skewing the real benefits your cpu upgrade has given you. Also, you want to make sure the cpu speed settings in your BIOS are correct--incorrect settings can turn a P4/3GHZ into something half as fast. I once gave a P3/800 the effective speed of a 400MHZ system by having the wrong speed settings in my BIOS. Flip side is it ran very cool :)
November 10, 200421 yr Installed lastest drivers, formatted my HD and after clean installNOOOOOOOOOOOOOTHING CHANGE SAME PERFORMANCE
November 10, 200421 yr "I was expecting to see at least 10-20fps increase so that i can have about 30fps at dense airports ,weather, etc............."What are your slider settings? I think you are just expecting too much from your upgrade if you have a large amount of traffic combined with dense airports and weather. Restore all the graphics sliders to default and see what framerates you get with default aircraft. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
November 10, 200421 yr Well my settings is default, just a fresh install of FS9no addon , and clear weather i get from 14-19fps at seattle while from 20-40 on normal airportsno AA OR AF applied i was getting the exact result with my old pc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 10, 200421 yr I got a new video card ATI Radeon 9600XT 11 months ago. It has certainly paid its way and has been worth more than upgrading my CPU which I haven't done. Its not expensive now, I'd recommend it. (Mine is a Sapphire) In Asia you should be able to get them cheaper, like Hong Kong or China.
November 10, 200421 yr There must be something amiss here. I recently upgraded from an AMD1900+ to an AMD64 3400 still using my old card an nvidia 4800SE although with 1024 megs of ram. FPS with the default flight and default settings at KSEA went from about 18 to 45 without AI, AA or AF in line with my expectations based on benchmark data. Difference less dramatic with AA/AF enabled as the vid card becomes a limiting factor but still substantial.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
November 10, 200421 yr "Well my settings is default, just a fresh install of FS9no addon , and clear weather i get from 14-19fps at seattle while from 20-40 on normal airportsno AA OR AF applied i was getting the exact result with my old pc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"When you mean default, what are these settings?~Screen Res~AI~AutogenThose are the only three settings I've tweaked down on my system, and despite that when the latter two are enabled my performance is close to yours--on a P3/800, with AA and AF enabled...Again I suggest looking at your speed settings in the BIOS--something may be wrong there that is throttling back your cpu performance. Also, if you are using a ForceFeedback stick, disable it to test your performance. There's an odd issue out there where FFB can choke even the best of systems under certain circumstances.-John
November 10, 200421 yr This may show where to look for problems...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/96963.gif
November 10, 200421 yr I don't think that it is your video card. The reason--- when I upgraded from a Celeron 500MHz running 512 MB SDRAM with a GFORCE-2 32MB vid card to a 1.4 Celron Tuliatin with all the other mentioned the same, I went from 10-12 FPS at airport 'x' to 15-17 at the same airport 'x'.So, there was a great difference in just swapping out the only thing I did---the CPU. You should be seeing MUCH better performance from your system.Like the others responding, I suggest with M.B. manual in hand, you go down each page, and feature of your BIOS and enable what will be a boost for performance. That is about the only thing you can do, other than swap out the final part of your old configuration---the vid card. I can suggest that if you can afford it, to pick up an ATI X800XT Pro AGP (for your system). You will not regret the purchase. The ****ONLY**** thing you must keep in mind though, is that all manu's are going to the NEW STANDARD which REPLACES the AGP port---PCI-EXPRESS. Unless you expect to keep your system for at leat three years, you might NOT want to pick up a high-end AGP 8 part if you think you might be upgrading to any new platform. If not---then grab one! :)Hope this helps, somewhat!Cheers!Mitch R.
